Difficulty changing input
My parents-in-law have Direct TV. I guess it’s the Genie model, if that’s a model.
I got them an Apple TV and am having a (Edited per community guidelines)able time with the remote. The input menu is accessed by pressing and holding the Enter button.
Then, if I understand correctly, you repeatedly press Enter to navigate through the input options. Genie, Apple TV, TV (via aerial I guess), AV.
the problem is that it’s really hard to navigate this list. Half the time I click enter to go through the inputs and it just selects the antenna option on its own (and they don’t have an aerial, so it’s just snow).
other times I can get to the correct input, but then the (Edited per community guidelines) overlay won’t go away. And I can’t figure out how to make it go away. Exit doesn’t work. Select doesn’t work.
I don’t know if this is an issue with the remote, with direct tv, or with the TV. Any ideas?

Does it work with the TV's remote?

Shannon, I guess that’s a good question. I’ll check it out.

Shannon, I have yet to go to the in-laws to test the TV remote, but I have another question. Am I right that the Source menu overlay is a function of DirectTV? How can you navigate the Source menu in a setup that works correctly? Do you know if you use the up/down buttons? Do you click Enter?

Reading this, isn't the input selection via the Apple remote?
If so, what does this have to do with DTV if the issue is selecting the input to the Apple system?

No. The issue is changing the input selection, either from DTV to the Apple TV or to DVD, via the genie remote. It is very difficult to use the menu that appears as an overlay. The options either cannot be navigated or the menu will not go away. I’m going to first verify that the batteries are okay and then probably go through the remote setup again.
Apple TV remote works fine with Apple TV; the issue is selecting HDMI 2 or AV from the input menu.

Hey Juniper
If I'm being unclear, apologies. I'm not talking about the Apple TV input menu (there is none). I'm talking about the television's input menu. Because I don't have direct TV and don't know how it works with the television, I was unsure about the menu belonging to direct TV or the television itself.
but now I get that the Genie remote is simply acting as a universal remote and activating the TV's own input menu.
The issue--I'm repeating myself--is that once the TV's input menu is activated by holding the enter key down--the behavior is irregular. You can't go through it using the cursor keys on the Genie remote. Nothing happens. Clicking input sometimes works, other times the TV immediately chooses the AIR input and it shows snow. Other times the overlay won't go away and nothing happens.

Yes, my own guess is that the Genie remote might have gotten corrupted or something and so I'm going to try reprogramming it. My in-laws seem to think it worked fine in the immediate months after DTV was installed.
