Old bill on credit report

Almost 2 years ago I had to cancel my service because a tree fell on the house we were renting and had to move. We moved in with family and they had TV service. I called and talked to customer service and they said send the equipment back and directv would write it off because of what happened. I sent the equipment back and have never heard anything else about it. Then all of sudden last week on my credit report there is a collection's account on the equipment and early termination. When I call to see why I can't get a answer without a account number. I have no idea what it was after 2 years. I need this removed from my credit report because it's interfering with me getting a new place to live now. What do I do to get this resolved without a big runaround ?

As suggested, contact the collection agency.

They won't remove the item at your request and they aren't going to 'write it off', but there's a chance that you can negotiate a lowered amount to get the amount to $0.

Write what off?  The ETF?  The balance due?  I find it hard to believe that they would 'write off' anything but I could be wrong.

@shannon02  Have you ever seen a situation where AT&T would "write off" an account?

DirecTV does not pro-rate your final bill so depending on when you cancelled and how your billing dates ran, there's a good chance you owed something.

at this point directv couldnt remove it from your credit report even if they wanted to,they no longer own the account and you have to deal with the collection agency.
