Must Be on Protection Plan to Replace Mouse?
I called DirecTV customer service yesterday. Our basic remote that we've had for several years has worn out, after replacing batteries it's still difficult at times to change channels and make other selections. The back battery holder won't close properly (has to be taped close). It's just plain worn out. When I finally did get through to the proper Customer Service Agent she said I would have to pay for the remote, or sign up for the Protection Plan at $8.99 (covers all equipment) and cancel the plan within 30 days. Then the remote would be "free". Ridiculous. It's a simple, cheap replacement, remote probably costs $5 to make.

Ok as a former protection plan agent let me give you the correct information
1. The basic protection plan does not cover everything (it covers receivers/clients, remotes, service calls, and parts of the dish)
2. There's a 30 day no claim period so if you want a free replacement remote you'll need to wait 30 days
3. If you want to use it immediately then you'll be charged $8.99 immediately so it won't be "free"

Those remotes are pretty cheap on Amazon or eBay.
