I signed up for AT&T home internet and Direct TV and the experience was horrible

I went to my local AT&T store here in San Mateo County.  I explained that I had a very bad experience with Comcast/Xfinity and that I wanted to switch service.  I arrived at the store at 5pm.  I left the store at 8pm.  It took this sales person 3 hours to order TV and internet.

When I told the sales rep I wanted auto pay only on direct Tv and not on the internet account he ignored me and set up autopay.  He did not want to answer any questions.  He had made up his mind what services we would get and never showed us any other options.

He was extreemly rude.  It is completely ridiculous that it took that long.  We missed dinner and we ended up going to a restaurant because he kept changing what he was saying and doing.  He got angry when I asked him why he needed my credit card for the internet service.  He then lied and said that I agreed to autopay for both services. Frankly I do not want any autopay for either service but if that is the only way I can get it then I will allow a charge to the credit card but I wanted to know how much the service was per month and what date they were going to autocharge the account.  He did not tell me that at all and continued to ignore me.  I also wanted a receipt showing what i ordered and the price of each service.  He finally told me that I had to pay 65 for the internet but gave me no receipt.  He claimed he could not ship the equipment to my address and he shipped it to the store which is very inconveinant.

I will keep the service even though it is three times what I paid to Xfinity for the same service.  Xfinity lost me when they kept adding to my account which is on contract.  They constantly lied to me and I found out that I have been paying for TV and I have never got the service.  I was hooked up to a antenna and they lied about needing a box for basic tv.  So they are fired.  I do not need problems with AT&T.  I do want a supervisor to call me to discuss this employee.  I always see ads on tv for AT&T and being a new customer ordering these two services I should have got a promotional gift card or something.  I should get something just for the aggravation in the sign up.

Though AT&T took ownership of DirecTV years ago, that was not a DirecTV employee. AT&T stores could only setup new service similar to the 3rd party Authorized Retailer they were for years. And AT&T last year sold off the last parts of DirecTV last year (though transaction does need to complete this year). So is possible that wasn't an AT&T owned store but a 3rd party Authorized Retailer in full.

DirecTV is still satellite service so requires a receiving dish installed by a tech and a box at each TV. This is not shipped to a store but an appointment scheduled and the tech brings all the equipment. The alternative is the new streaming-only providers DIRECTV STREAM a bring your own device (BYOD) model or DirecTV via Internet with a required box (similar service model to the traditional satellite service).

There were many red flags when you signed up. Personally I would have taken those issues as a sign and walked way (at least from that specific store). Customer support is over the phone where you call them, not the other way around. But since AT&T has sold DirecTV, I doubt that would do much as it sounds like it wasn't even an AT&T owned store. So your best bet is to file a BBB complaint on the store itself.

Ads on TV are for orders directly from the company (national offers), not necessarily the same for authorized retailers. In the future get the paperwork, get the receipt, and if an employee refuses to answer questions, ignores you, evasive, etc. WALK AWAY.

I just discovered that Direct TV has a free service with Roku.  I am taking back the Direct TV device and canceling the service.  They were going to charge me 89 dollars a month for a service that is completely free with Roku.  Thanks for your information on Direct TV.

It's free with any streaming device, not just for Roku. Even tablets, computers, and phones. It's called "MyFree DirecTV". Limited content and no local channels. Details located here

Certainly try out the "MyFree DirecTV" but just be aware it is limited content.

Since you got from a retailer, I am concerned about which service you got. If DirecTV (satellite) or DirecTV via Internet (streaming-only), where the provided box is required, that comes with a 24 month service agreement valued at $20 for each month remaining when you cancel. From what you've described, I suspect the store employee pulled a further shady stunt and you got a service agreement they snuck past you.

The other version DIRECTV STREAM, doesn't require their box (though you can purchase it from places like Wal-Mart) as you just log into the app on the streaming device of your choice (Roku, Firestick, etc.).
