Likely, the two-year discount in programming you were reciecing as a new customer has finally ended (or you were granted a temporary discount on the base package).
Check your bill from December and compare it to January, you will see that the monthly discount on the base package (i.e. Entertainment, Choice, Ultimate, Premier) has been applied in December but removed in January.
If the service is too expensive, call DIRECTV (number in my greeting below) and say ‘cancel’ to the robot to be sent to the retention department where an agent can assist you. They may be willing to give you a discount, but do not expect it to come easily as directv is suffering from loss of subscribers to cheaper alternatives such as streaming live TV.

Are you wanting to know why your bill is $50 higher or did you have another question regarding it?
I would read the bill prior and see what is different. Look for any discounts completing but also check for any one-time charges (such as PPVs) to account for the difference.
If you still have trouble understanding your bill then share the details (such as a screenshot with personal details removed) so you can get guidance from other customers. Otherwise, call DirecTV so they can go over your bill with you.

New customers no longer get the 1 yr discount, they get a 2 yr price lock.

Regardless of the change to how new customer accounts work for the 1st year or two, at almost $50 that is most likely temporary discounts of some sort completing. Though not impossible for any one-time charges with it as well.
The OP will need to review their bill to verify exactly what it was for.
