I just had my ATT Direct TV set up I can go to the guide and choose a program, but my channel changer does work

I have my new ATT Direct TV set up. I have to go to the Guide to choose a program. I'd like to be able to change channels with my remote but it does not allow me to "channel surf".  I must go to the Guide every time I want to change to a different station.
