DNS in 2024

A quick question, does anybody still receive all the NYC/LA Distant Network Channels?  I’m wondering because somebody must or they wouldn’t still send those signals on 390-399!

I still receive all East (because I’m in the NYC zone) and KNBC and KTTV (I guess I’m still grandfathered). But does anybody receive KABC and KCBS?  Thanks

No, a new customer cannot actually receive DNS channels unless they are Grandfathered like you.

Generally speaking, if someone lives in the LA area with DIRECTV, they will get KABC, KCBS, KNBC, etc. These locals are distant and can be viewed anywhere in the continental United States.

Yes, you should be able to get the big four NY AND LA locals. If you are not receiving KCBS and KABC, what error code is showing up on your receiver? When did this issue start? Have you made any changes to your receiver or perhaps programming?

Hello there.

Key provisions of a national law called the Satellite Television Extension and Localism Act Reauthorization (STELAR) expired at 11:59 PM ET on May 31, 2020. These provisions allowed customers without direct access to a local ABC or CBS station to enjoy the same network programs that others receive but through an out-of-market network station. Unfortunately, Congress has decided not to renew key provisions of this law. DIRECTV may no longer provide customers access to these out-of-market network stations.

Some customers might still have access to out-of-market networks on channels 390-399. However, these channels are unavailable for new or existing customers who require the channels. Please visit directv.com/channel-lineup for a list of local channels available in your ZIP code. DIRECTV regrets any inconvenience this may cause.

Hi all thanks for the responses. I’m well aware of STELLA, STELAR on and on. It’s amazing how our Congress can get nothing done and for so long… sorry, social content…

I go way back. I’m from the days of Hughes, Prime24 and USB that’s what’s now Directv.
I am grandfathered that far.
the last time Congress refused to pass the DNS rule I lost ABC and CBS. Why???  No one could ever answer. im still waiting for them to be reinstated.
I was just wondering how many people still have the full DNS?

I was thinking of requesting wavers from WCBS and WABC for the West Coast feeds???  What say all of you?

While you can try it is doubtful that ABC or CBS will grant it as they are the ones that caused the FCC not to renew it.

Hi, actually it wasn’t the “O&O” Stations (network owned) that demanded non-coverage, it was the NAB, the Assoc of non-aligned Stations that sent monies to Congress-people to stop the advance of the bills. Their reasoning was to make DIRECTV and others “carry” every broadcaster in the nation. The bill came close but still didn’t satisfy!

The networks make money regardless. (I worked in advertising before retirement)

the symbiotic relation between Congress and the Broadcasters cannot be forgotten.  Who makes all that money during elections???
Thanks all.

While there are still a few places that DTV doesn't have a rebroadcasting contract with the local station, DTV carries most locals now and certainly the major locals ABC,NBC and CBS.

I seem to recall reading something that said that the DNS channels are used by the major networks to distribute their programing to their affiliate local stations. I know that ABC NY and LA control centers send the same programing to each other so if there is a problem they can switch to the operating center.
