DirecTV satellite dropping Alexa voice control???
I use Alexa to control my DTV sat due to physical disabilities. I got a message on my Genie today that DTV is dropping Alexa voice support as of 10/17/23 (in just one week!!!).
Is anyone aware of any other voice control options that DO NOT require pressing a button on a remote to activate??
Thanks!
Mark

Hello there! With DIRECTV Gemini Voice remote control, you can use your voice to change channels, search for shows, control devices, and more – just ask Google. Access your Google Account to personalize your experience. Please use this link https://www.directv.com/support/article/000091378 for more information. Please see your Private Note to take a closer look at your case. Jhonny, DIRECTV Community Specialist

IIRC you have to press the mike button on the Gemini remote to use it.
AFAIK there are no other voice control options for DTV.
There is another post about this and DTVhelp is checking on it.

I'm having the same exact problem. My Alexa connection just stopped working this week and after doing some reading on the internet I stumbled upon this. I talked to DirecTV through chat and they were not helpful. I still don't understand if there's a hands-free option that does not require initiation of a talk button on a remote to initiate simple functions like turning the channel. It's very frustrating that they took this feature away

DTV sent all DTV receivers a message saying that ALEXA will be dropped first on Oct 27 that was then changed to Nov 8.

Regardless of the notification or implementation date you are referencing above, my equipment no longer works with voice activated Alexa commands and it's extremely frustrating. I understand that this is a business decision to disable features that would push users to either upgrade their equipment but it adversely affects longtime customers that have relied on this technology.
As commented repeatedly throughout this thread and similar posts on this website, there's a portion of this user base that has relied on this feature for a long time. I get DirecTV's a global corporation and they don't set out to satisfy every customer individually but this move is adversely affecting some more than others. Implementing it without a similar option is really shortsighted in my mind regardless of how small you think the user population is.

DTV is only allowed to broadcast in the USA. DTV has never had voice activated remotes until the Gemini came out.

It's not an issue about voice activated remotes. There was an interface that DirecTV had some control of or supported that allowed Amazon Alexa to interface with their receivers and change the channels and do other commands. They've chosen the disable that feature and it's inconveniencing customers. That's the point, end of story.
There's no replacement feature or workaround to operate their equipment hands-free like was previously available with supported skills through Amazon Alexa.
If this feature no longer exists it takes away my primary reasoning for paying the exorbitant amount that DirecTV charges. I'm actively searching to find a different provider because this benefit no longer exists.

Is voice control of Directv Stream available thru any devices (Samsung tv’s, Roku, Chromecast, etc.) using Alexa, Siri or Google Assistant? I know about Gemini - pressing the voice button on the remote is not an option for a person who can’t use their hands.

That is the reason there is no workaround, DTV didn't do voice commands.

Kallcklm52 - Thank you for adding your thoughts but no everything I've read that there is no voice commands through DirecTV. I've read a number of other sites and asked other experts but everyone has concluded this is now across the board with the DirecTV platform, whether that's with their current equipment or DirecTV stream or external streaming service apps.
Shannon - The workaround is not disabling the previously functional options. There was no reason for DirecTV to disable this feature other than thinking it's a beneficial action that would result in driving other users to upgrade their equipment. This isn't an issue if DirecTV doesn't actively take action and disable the previously functional operation through Alexa.

For most upgrading will be free so DTV will lose money as they still have to pay the techs to install or shipping.

That's literally the worst answer ever. DirecTV makes money on the contract that you sign and the people that are installing are mainly independent contractors. I get this conversation is going nowhere and I'm wasting my time at this point. It's just sad I've been a customer for 20 years and this is where it ends, an action DirecTV didn't have to take.

No, that only says you will keep DTV for 2 yrs or pay a ECF/ETF of $20 per unused month. Doesn't matter if they are independent or not they are still paid a fee to install DTV.

I don't care how you try to justify this but your rational makes no sense. DirecTV is not a successful business if they lose money on offering free equipment and installation. Those costs are clearly passed down to the customers through any number of means whether it's the stupid monthly service fee that I've paid for years now and I'm going to get no benefit out of or just the high cost of their package in general.
They're going to need to keep coming up with new ways to generate revenue as more and more people quit their service and move to streaming packages. I get it and maybe my assumption that they care about long-term customers and their satisfaction is warped because of the current environment and their need to continue to find new revenue streams. I realize you don't work for DirecTV based on what your badge says but whatever benefit you're getting, more power to you. Keep up the good work answering people's questions with non-answers.
✌️ From a long-term DirecTV customer who's had enough.
