Will my wireless TV boxes work behind VPN router?

I am planning to install a new router on my U-verse system to increase the performance of my wireless network. Additionally, I use a VPN service for work & our vendor provides an easy way to install their VPN service directly to the new router. However, it occurred to me that my TV services may be impacted if I do this? I have 2 wired and 3 wireless set top boxes in my home. Will my U-verse TV services still work behind a VPN enabled router?

There is no reason you cannot have a 3rd party router with or without VPN.  We're only saying that when you do so, do not move your AT&T U-verse IPTV devices to that router.  Leave them directly connected to the Gateway.

If you're looking for increased Wi-Fi bandwidth and better coverage, that is indeed likely with a third party router.  Do not expect that it will do anything to speed up Ethernet-connected devices.

Wireless?  Or wifi?

I have 3 set top boxes that are simply plug & play with no Ethernet/wired connection. Not sure if this means they’d be considered wireless or WiFi but I assumed because they run off the standard U-verse modem/router combo they are running on WiFi? Do they possibly use a different wireless signal than WiFi? I guess I never considered this. I apologize for my technical ignorance on this one 😨 but I can post the model # of the 3 boxes when I get home if this would help. I appreciate any help/guidance with this in advance!

@Abmatz   Uverse TV traffic needs to stay isolated and remain on the gateway.  There are technical reasons why this is true.

Do you have a AT&T WAP separate from, but connected to the Gateway?  You should, if you have wireless receivers.  That, and the wired receivers, must remain directly connected to the Gateway or via an Ethernet switch (not-shared with any Wireless Access Point/router).  If you are a networking expert, there are ways around this, and we can discuss, but it is best to not.

I am not a networking expert so I think I’m going to skip this project! At a minimum, anyway, I’ll skip the VPN bring enabled right at the router. I appreciate the help, though 🙏

I guess my last question is whether it would be worth it to install a higher quality dual band router (again, without the VPN modification) to increase speed & overall performance? Or would using a third party router just generally be discouraged with my U-verse setup that includes 3 wireless TV receivers?

@Abmatz

I use an Orbi tri-band here in access point mode.
