Uverse wireless receiver works but won't show recordings from wired DVR

I just had wireless receiver installed upstairs.  Gateway is so far away that connecting wireless access point to Gateway wasn't working well.  So tech connected wireless access point to ethernet port on back of DVR, which is located much closer to wireless unit that the gateway is.  Wireless receiver is working well except it does not "see" the recordings on the DVR.  Any suggestions other than rebooting everything, which I have done?  Is the problem caused by using the DVR ethernet port for the WAP?

Most likely yes....

When the receiver makes an advanced request, one defined by the DVR fulfillment such as pause, play, record, rewind, etc... the request route is normally wifi receiver to WAP to gateway to DVR to gateway to WAP to wifi receiver.

Your current setup prevents that from occurring... wifi receiver to WAP to ethernet port of DVR to gateway to DVR to gateway to DVR ethernet port to WAP to wireless receiver.

Either need to pay for a new ethernet line to be installed for the WAP, not using the port on the DVR, or move the wifi receiver within range of the WAP connecting directly to the gateway.

Or just use live TV only on that wireless receiver with no advance DVR functions.

Could also purchase power line adapters to try to hardwire the receiver to the gateway ethernet port. Power Line adapters have to plug directly into ac outlets, cannot use outlet strips.

Thanks, I was afraid of that when the tech said "ATT doesn't like us to do this".  Unfortunately neither of the options you suggest appear feasible, with the possible exception of the powerline adapter (since we are using one as an extended in the same room). Thanks very much for saving me an hour on hold with ATT

I’ve been installing Uverse for almost a decade and I have NEVER installed a WAP using the Ethernet port on the DVR, nor would I ever trust using this method to work at all. I’m surprised it even allows it to work at all! Your instincts were right. Unfortunately sometimes the options are slim for what you can do when wireless locations are out of range. Check to see if you have coax in the room, to allow a hardwired box. You could have someone run cat5 direct to the wireless location to hardwire. Or like the other poster said, have cat5 ran for the WAP to be closer. This is why I love ATT TV so much. All these worries go away in most cases, as long as you have decent broadband speeds.

Thanks but now I am even more puzzled.  I took the advice regarding the use of a powerline ethernet adapter.  Set up is now as follows:

1) Gateway is connected to powerline ethernet adapter via an ethernet port on Gateway (There is no special port for Wireless Access Point)

2) Wireless receiver is in bedroom.  Powerline adapter connected to Wireless Access POint.  WAP paired with wireless receiver.

Wireless receiver works for TV but cannot access recorded programs on DVR or use commands such as pause or record.

This confuses me because the powerline adapter is theoretically equivalent to a direct ethernet cable between the Gateway and the WAP.

As to the inquiry regarding the use of a hardwired receiver, that is what the tech replaced and took away with him.  there was a slightly glitchey coax so he put in a wireless instead -- but now I cannot use dvr from the wireless.

Suggestions?

FWIW, I tried using the wireless backhaul provided by the Orbi RBK50 mesh system.  Think of this as a remote, wireless Ethernet connection fed to a satellite that has a built in switch.  Long story short, and despite Netgear claiming support for IGMPv3 which U-verse requires, never could get advanced features like time shifting to work reliably, so I gave up.

Well I'll be -- I got the set up described in my last message to work!  That is:

Gateway ethernet port to powerline adapter

Ethernet port on distant bedroom powerline adapter to WAP in distant bedroom

Probably because of restarting and repairing, the wireless receiver in distant bedroom now can perform all functions, and and can access recordings on the downstairs DVR.

Thanks for the help
