UVerse TV - No Sound
I have a picture but no sound. I have restarted the gateway and the receiver several times but no help. This is a recurring problem that usually can be fixed by restarting the received but that no longer fixes it.
AT&T says I need a new receiver, but we don't want to lose the recordings that we have.

If this is a receiver, you won't lose recordings.
If this is the DVR, then you will lose recordings.
There's a big difference between "DVR" and "receiver" and it's important to not confuse the two.

It's the two combined, a At&t U-verse Motorola VIP2250 DVR HD Receiver. The AT&T rep on the phone said that the technician would be able to save our recordings, but I am skeptical about that. It also seems unlikely to me that the recorder/receiver could deliver a picture but no sound. I guess that's possible, but it sounded more like AT&T can't figure out what is wrong so they are replacing it for want of any other solution.

Not true and it's a shame that you were told this.

We want to help clear things up, @GreatDancer2022!
Thanks to @baseballisback for sharing that helpful information!
As our ACE stated above, you will lose your recordings if the DVR is being replaced.
Please feel free to reach back out if you need any help after your tech visit. Thank you for contacting the AT&T Community Forums!

Your list of "scheduled recordings" will be saved. For example, shows scheduled to record tomorrow or this weekend will carry over to a new DVR. What's on your DVR now will be lost.
I'd expect even the outsourced people to read from the right script.

I'm not surprised at all to hear that our recordings will be lost. In the meantime the sound has come back again. We restarted the DVR/Receiver several times to no avail, ditto the gateway and it didn't help. For some reason after being shut off for a couple of hours the sound started working again when we turned it back on. This makes me think that there may be something else going on and the DVR is actually ok. I have no idea what that might be though. I would hate to replace the DVR and lose all our recordings, and still have the same problem going forward.

Do you have a receiver you can use on that TV? Try swapping the DVR and the second receiver for a few days.
What about other things like streaming video or DVDs?

Possible issues...
1) The ATT receiver... if have a wireless receive try placing it at the TV.
2) The cable used between the receiver and the tv..TV... reseat or replace cable.
3) the tv itself, if have a small TV try moving it to the main tv location, and move the cable(s) over.
I personally believe the least expensive item is first to check, in this case the cable between the tv..TV... may be HDMI, component, or ?
Generally if DVR issue, the DVR dies... all lights flashing or no lights at all. Good picture but sound issues suspect the cabling or the TV itself, especially if older tv.

I agree that one of the cables is the most likely problem. I replaced a HDMI cable but still need to replace a coaxial cable for the antenna. I have a signal spliter for the antenna cable that lets me switch to an indoor antenna whenever UVerse goes out. That may be the problem, so I'll try removing it and see if that helps. I also have a separate DVR/VHS player that is connected that I rarely use that I may remove. The sound only goes out every 6 weeks or so, so I may not know if these things help for some time.
