Switch wireless receiver to use gateway instead of WAP
Hello,
I recently had troubles with a wireless receiver and so AT&T sent me a new one (an ISB7005) along with a new gateway modem. Before setting up the new modem, I tried the new wireless receiver to ensure it worked and as such, just used the existing WAP. I saw that the new gateway is capable of allowing a wireless receiver to connect to it directly via Wi-Fi. I would like to do this so I can get rid of the WAP and have one less piece of equipment.
That said, the wireless receiver now insists on using the WAP and I can't find any way to make it use the now installed new gateway. Is there any way I can reset the wireless receiver to make it use the new gateway instead? I've tried doing the non-disaster recovery reset and the disaster recovery reset and both had to have the WAP powered on in order for the receiver to even boot.
Thanks for any assistance on this!

Where did you "see" this? AT&T tried allowing direct connection to the Gateways fairly early in the deployment lifetime of Wireless Receivers. It was not considered a success, and the configuration deprecated. So, no, you cannot do this; you must either use the WAP or an Ethernet cable.

Interesting. I saw this when I initially turned on the wireless receiver. The first boot screen had a graphic that said push the WPS button on the gateway OR the WAP. It was similar (but not exactly) to the graphic seen in https://www.att.com/ecms/dam/att/consumer/support/landingpage/userguides/pdf/wireless-receiver-self-installation-guide-ATT110900769.pdf for step 3A. After the initial pairing to the WAP, if I unplug the WAP, the screen ONLY says the WAP and explicitly says not the gateway.
But it it's not really possible in the first place, then I'll forget it:)
Thanks for the reply.

Hello @townsend, we're here to help with your inquiry on wireless receiver to only use the gateway.
As the ACE @JefferMC mentioned, you will need to use Wireless Access Point or an Ethernet cable.
We suggest reviewing how to set up Wireless Access Point.
Please reach out if you have additional questions or concerns. Thank you for contacting AT&T.

The only gateway equipment that worked on was the 5268, before band steering implementations to support the release of ATT AIRTIES for wireless extenders.
The other dual band gateways (599, 210, 320) never had this option.
The software update for 5268 to support extenders removed WPS 5G wireless receiver support.
Thus the 7005 wireless receiver software may have shown it as an option, there are no gateways that support this function.
The Uverse wireless receiver 7005 using 5G Wi-Fi was released in 4th quarter 2011, the gateways at that time were all only 2.4Ghz b/g Wi-Fi supporting Uverse IPTV service… these were the 2WIRE 3800, 3801 and 3812 (iNID first bonded gateway) using the 38HG. These were Ethernet T100 ports. The Uverse WAP 401 could only support max of 2 wireless receivers.
The 4th quarter 2013 gateway release of Motorola / Arris 589 remained 2.4Ghz b/g while adding n support along with T100 / T1000 Ethernet ports. The 589 was bonded pair capable becoming the replacement for the 3801/3812 gateways for new installations and future gateway swaps.
The 4th quarter 2015 gateway release of the 2WIRE/PACE 5268 became the first dual band gateway offering 2.4Gjz b/g/n and 5Ghz n/ac that initially as previous stated allowed the 5Ghz WPS to used for wireless receivers instead of using the Uverse WAP (401, 501, 2500).
When the AIR TIE extenders were released to market requiring band steering, all customers who had been using the 5268 as WAP was software updated their wireless receivers quit working resulting in many repair appointments to install a new WAP and reconnect the receivers to the required WAP.
edit ….
for first 4 years (2011-2015) and last several years (2017-2023) have always required WAP for Uverse receivers.
Additionally all the following IPTV gateways (3800, 3801, 3812, 589, 599, BGW 210, BGW 320) have always required a Uverse WAP for Uverse wireless receivers.

Thanks @my thoughts for filling in some gaps in my knowledge of this. So it was only ever 5268AC, and the required firmware has been removed in favor of Airties Extender support.
