Router replaced and new one does not send signal to 2 other tv sets.

Installed the new router and works great on the TV where the router is located.  Two other sets canot find a signal. Old router had a cable connection but new one does not.  What needs to be done to fix this?

I am embarrassed for AT&T that they provided the above reply.

To restate the situation:

You just received a replacement Gateway (likely a BGW210 or BGW320) for one that was failing for some reason.  The old gateway has a coax connector and the new one does not.  Two of your TV receivers were connected to the Gateway via coax and now cannot find a signal, so you have no TV on two receivers.

Assuming the above is correct, here are your options:

1) Depending on what the problem with the older gateway was, switch back to the old Gateway that has a coax connection and return the new one.  This may not be practical, but I offer it up just in case.

2) Call AT&T and cancel the two extra receivers and save $20 /month.  You might not like this one either, but it's an option.

3) Purchase an HPNA/Ethernet adapter (something like https://www.amazon.com/Ethernet-Adapter-Network-Homes-Satellite/dp/B001RJMBZU ) and connect the coax to it and it to a LAN port on your Gateway.  This should allow the coax-connected TV receivers to communicate with the Gateway.

4) Replace the coax connections for the two Receivers with Cat5e or better Twisted Pair cabling and use Ethernet to connect the two receivers.

5) Contact AT&T support (see the Contact Us link below) to send you Wireless TV Receivers and a dedicated WAP to replace the two coax-connected receivers that no longer work.  Tell them you do not expect to have to pay the one-time charge for this.  You may end up having to go through an external complaint process to credit off this fee.

To specifically rebut the suggestions given by Bruce:

  • Rebooting the Gateway isn't going to resolve a cable with nowhere to connect it.
  • The TV Receivers are not wireless capable if they were connected via coax.  You cannot connect U-verse TV receivers to anything other than the dedicated AT&T TV WAP; a Wi-Fi extender is useless here, even if you did have wireless TV receivers).
  • Smart Home Manager will show U-verse TV gear that appears to the Gateway, but otherwise it is of little help with U-verse TV.

Hey @miboiler, we understand that you have issue with internet connectivity, we’re here to walk you through the right path.

 

To get started, we recommend that you Reboot your Gateway by unplugging the power cord from the back of your gateway/modem for 20 sec, plug the power cord back and then reboot the gateway or modem.

 

Since you mentioned there is no Ethernet ports on new Wi-Fi, we suggest you to get a Wi-Fi extender to get better connectivity for multiple device.

 

Also, try out our Smart Home Manager app, which can help diagnose what is happening with your internet service. It will also give suggestions on what troubleshooting steps to take to fix the intermittent service.

Thanks JefferMC for all of the great information.  

You grasped the router problem quickly.  Between two different chat session I spent almost 5 hours trying to explain my problem and the fact that I had come to the conclusion that my router had an intermittent problem. Finally got one person to send me a new router where the installation went well until 2 of my 3 TVs were not finding U-Verse.  I did as you suggested and switched back to the old router and everything was good.  I could see that the coax cable on the original router matched the coax on the two set top boxes.  I jumped to your option number 5.  Went to my local AT&T store and asked for a phone number that would reach a real person. 

He gave me the option of two new wireless  receivers that I could install myself or send out a tech and rewire to make what I have work.  I asked him to send out a tech and setup the wireless.  Note: I only remember when this U-Verse was new, 2 techs worked over 4 hours the set this up originally.  

Rebooting several times did nothing except raise my frustration level. 

Maybe you have some insight on the original problem.  My computer is dropping the wireless internet connection several times a date.  I upgraded my drivers as one of the automatic chats suggested., but no help.  My TVs have been buffering more recently, therefore my jump to the router as the problem.  The new router while I had it hooked up was faster on the speed check but it still lost computer conection once during the day that it ran.  Not sure that the router is going to fix my dropping problem but it is doing a better job streaming.

The BGW gateways have better wireless (both in terms of newer protocols and better implementation/reliability, though the bar was awfully low for that) than the 5268AC and 569/599 ones.  If you're really having a Wi-Fi specific issue, the real solution might be to get a Third Party Access Point and disable the Wi-Fi on the Gateway.  Or, perhaps lock the channels on the Gateway to keep it from changing (when the Gateway thinks it needs to change to a less-crowded channel, it can cause your client to disconnect while trying to find where your Gateway has gone in terms of a new channel).

    1. Press Menu on the U-verse Remote Control.
    2. Scroll down to Help, then press OK.
    3. Select Information.
    4. Scroll to Troubleshoot & Resolve, then press OK.
    5. Select the area you want to troubleshoot.
    6. Allow the interactive diagnostic test to run and complete.
    7. Follow the onscreen instructions to attempt to resolve the issue online.

 

You can also manage dispatch repair appointments, suspend or resume troubleshooting and reset passwords for email accounts.

I'd suggest the wireless receivers option. As said, tell them you shouldn't have to pay any sort of swap/upgrade fee for something they did. If they don't waive it, they *should* be able to credit your account in other ways such as $10-20 off for a year.

Failing that...and this is difficult to explain without seeing your exact situation...an ethernet cable looks like a phone cord. Most (all?) of the gateways have these ports in the back and I *think* every wired receiver has these as well.

To replace your coax (round) cable with an ethernet connection is something you'd have to do yourself. AT&T can do it, but they'd charge a fee of something like $99.

Tech came out with a new router that had a cable connection where the router ATT sent me only had the ethernet connection.  Tech installed that router.  He did not any have wireless boxes.   I thought it was better but a few days later I have the same problem with my computer dropping the internet and new router buffers the streaming more.  Tech said I needed to get some of my wireless devices off the net because each one took some of the band width.  As a side this is an old house and it would require a lot of work to install ethernet cable.

A wireless device that's not receiving/transferring data takes none of your Internet bandwidth and very little of your available Wi-Fi capacity, so that's likely an excuse, not a reason.  Secondly, U-verse TV has priority over Internet traffic, so Internet use should not cause you issues with U-verse TV viewing, unless your line is marginal when you near capacity some borderline frequencies starting causing errors for the TV traffic.

At this point we might should look at how good your connection is to the AT&T Network.  Check the Broadband tab at http://192.168.1.254/ and post screenshots of the information tables, especially sync rates, Signal-Noise Margin, Attenuation and error counts.
