Remote Control Problem

The mute button on my AT&T U-Verse remote control (S10) quit working.  AT&T sent me a replacement remote (S30).  I programmed the new (refurbished) unit which worked fine initially. The power button then began turning on and off only my DVR, not both the TV and DVR. I reprogramed the remote which again worked fine initially but then continued to have the same problem. Also, after working fine initially the volume control buttons reversed function so that the (+) button reduced volume and the (-) button increased volume. I've had several conversations with AT&T customer support but they were unable to find a solution.  They sent a second S30 remote which didn't have a volume button problem but did have the same power button problem. My TV is a Samsung 40" LCD which I purchased in 2009. I would appreciate any advice.

ATT customer support personnel guided me through several automatic and manual programming methods but none of them worked.  They also questioned whether my TV is compatible with the S30 remote since it is 12 years old. Is that a feasible possibility?

Thank you for the updated information, @preston4275.

  • What is the model of your Samsung TV?
  • How did you go about pairing the remote to the TV?
  • Did you use the automatic search or manual set up?

It is possible it could be a compatibility issue, let us know more so we can better answer your questions.

The model is Samsung LN40B630N1FXZA, Serial No. AUYK3CLSCD01267F, Version SS02. The remote was sent to me by AT&T with no input from me. I tried both the automatic search and manual set up. Thanks for your continued help.

Hey @preston4275, we understand that you're still having trouble with the remote programing. Don't worry were here to help.

When programing the remote you did try the steps located on the link below?

You can also try using the our TS&R tool on your TV to troubleshoot your remote.

Please let us know if that works for you.

AT&T customer support spent an hour with me on the phone trying every programming option they could think of.  We were frequently able to get the system to work properly, but several hours later (or the next day) it would fail again. I'll retry everything again and hope for better results, but it will take some time.

I've referred to the programming and troubleshooting guides listed above. They initially correct the problems, but they return later in the day.  Maybe it is a compatibility issue with my 12 year old Samsung.

Hey @preston4275.

  • Yes, this could be due to the device being old and not updated properly causing conflict with the app.
  • Is your device running the latest IOS?

Please let us know.

I got my TV somewhere around 2008-2010. It works fine with the U-Verse remote. Yo could try one of the third-party universal remotes, but there's no guarantee. I doubt it's an issue with the TV itself.

I'm sure you're aware that the remote is super-sensitive, right? If it moves just a tiny bit, it's quite possible for one device to not shut down.

My advice? Just keep the other remotes handy. I know it's a pain, but that's what I do. My audio receiver seems to have a mind of its own and it'll not get a power command from the U-Verse remote.

Can the U-Verse DVR be left on 24 hours a day? By leaving it on, the power button on my S30 remote turns my TV on and off and doesn't affect my DVR.  All other functions work OK.

Yes, the DVR can be on 24 hours a day. However, if the power light is on, it's using a stream. If that's the case, you could get a message about too many streams in use or be unable to record a show.

Of course, it'll also use more power if left on.

So while it can be on, it's not recommended.

It *should* be plugged in to an outlet 24/7 so it can record. If it's not plugged in, or if there's no power to it (power outage), then it can't record.

FiOS? You're in the wrong place. Go to the Verizon forums.

The U-Verse service was shut down to new subscribers in early 2020.

If you're talking about DirecTV Stream (formerly known as AT&T TV), go to http://forums.directv.com
