Red x on TV after power surge

This happened a couple of weeks ago and all we could get was a red X on the screen and No Signal.  The telephone support person said the DVR needed replacing.  A technician was sent to replace it, had everything working fine, then tonight there was another power surge and the same thing happened again.   We have reset the DVR several times with no luck.

Sounds like you may need some surge protection on your equipment.

We have a surge protector but need to get a battery backup instead.

After trying to manually reset the DVR many times, we unplugged it for about an hour this morning and it is fine now🤷‍♀️

It's my understanding that AT&T equipment is preferred to be used without surge equipment.

Use a UPS.

Also, if the DVR is directly connected to the gateway as its supposed to be, it will recover from a red X if the hardware is functional and a valid internet connection is present.

We left the DVR turned off overnight and the next morning it had reset.

There was another storm last night and we are back to the red X this morning.

The gateway is connected to a Netgear box and the Netgear is connected to the DVR.  There is not a direct connection from the gateway to the DVR.

Can you provide model numbers on those Netgear boxes?  I don't want to just assume they're Ethernet switches.

Connecting through a GS105E is a standard way of adding ports to the Gateway and not a surprise, or an issue for your DVR to be connected that way.  Perhaps your local VRAD is also having some power issues, resulting in your DVR not being able to communicate for a while.  Once communications are all back up, the DVR works.

There are multiple potential reasons for the Red X, and the number that sometimes goes with it can indicate which of these problems it is.  Unfortunately, AT&T doesn't see fit to share the meanings of those numbers.  But it can be a communication issue (can't get to the management server to authenticate) or the box has a hardware problem.

No luck!  Tried all of the recovery instructions several times again.  Guess I will call another cable service tomorrow and switch our internet and cell phones as well.

It sounds to me moreso like an electrical issue. Keep in mind that early termination fees could apply, AT&T does not pro-rate for partial month services and you cannot come back to U-Verse when you find out that they raise your price, don't have all your channels, the customer service is awful, etc.

Oh, and fiber/streaming isn't cable.
