Help with programming the UVerse remote

My much loved NAD amp (pure analog, pure audio) finally died. I replaced it with a Sony STR-DH590 receiver. This let me eliminate the HDMI switch, the optical to analog audio converter, and various analog cables from other devices. The Sony is now connected to a LG BD/DVD player BD570 (very rarely used), an Apple TV, and the Uverse DVR. The display device is a Panasonic TC-P50U50 TV.

I'm current stuck using three remotes and would like to get it down to two. Clearly the Apple TV will continue to require its own remote and that's fine. Yes, I could use my iPhone to control it but no matter, that's not what brings me to this forum for help.

I can't find a code for programming the AUX button on the UVerse remote that speaks to the Sony receiver. In the process I've also lost the use of the mute button for the UVerse since both the TV and the receiver have a mute function, and since the audio is now delivered over HDMI, it appears that the Sony is the right place for controlling that.

Ideally we end up with the UVerse remote regaining a mute function (via the Sony) while retaining the ability to power up/down the TV. I'd also like the Sony to be able to power up/down the TV.

I've tried the programming process on the remote - Hold AUX and OK, punch in the code, test - to no avail. I'm asking for suggestions from the assembled wisdom of this forum.

Here's the followup (and closure) on this issue. Took delivery of the new remote, which is an S30. Did the quick setup for the video (used the single digit code for my brand of TV), fiddled a little to get the power on/off for all devices synced, and done. Volume and mute work, I think we have resolution here. When the TV powers up, the receiver senses that over the HDMI cable and powers on; the inverse is true when the TV powers down.

So the net/net of this is the newer remote can solve this kind of issue for others. I'll also point out that the S30 remote is available from many sources for less than AT&T sells it for.

Perhaps you can re-read my initial post. I understand how to program my remote. I tried all the codes listed for the Sony receiver and the Panasonic TV on the S-10 remote that I have and did not get results that work. I'm looking for input from anyone with direct experience with the Sony unit I listed above, or other suggestions given I've tried all the codes listed. Or perhaps ATT would like to ship me a S-20 to test, assuming it would work with the existing ATT DVR I have.

"on the S-10 remote that I have..."

It feels like you are not reading all the detail in my posting, but as I already stated I have an S-10 remote.

Hi, @mleeds.

Here is more information on how to program the your S-10 remote. Just keep in mind, that not all equipment can be programmed with the remote.

Let us know if this helps, or if you have any other questions or concerns.

Is that statement, 'not all equipment can be programmed with the remote' reflective of the S-10-S3 that I have or inclusive of all the ATT Uverse remotes? I've gotten the setup to the point that using the remote gets the DVR, TV, and receiver powered up since the receiver detects that the TV is on via the HDMI connection and turns itself on. However the Uverse remote still does not control either volume up/down or mute on the receiver or the DVR(I would like to get these features working on the receiver) and input device selection (which I suspect will not be supported). I do note that when selecting the TV button on the Uverse remote I can then use the TV/Video button on the remote to toggle inputs on the TV (useless since I need to toggle the receiver).

I've had no luck getting the AUX button to control anything on the receiver. I wish there was better mapping of device codes to device rather than trying a list of codes, none of which seem to work. Nor did either of the search methods.

On a separate note, I do suggest a quick guide that explains that ATT UVerse has many iterations of the remote, both model and version number and that there are slightly different instructions and device codes for each. This is not clear up front.

Hi, @mleeds.

That statement is in regards to all the AT&T U-verse remotes. There are some equipment that can not be programmed, and the only functions that work are the volume or channels.

You have stated you have tried a lot of codes, but have you tried the auto  programming with your S-10?

These are the steps for the Auto Programming:

  1. Turn on the equipment to be programmed, such as the TV, DVD player, or auxiliary equipment, and point the remote control at the selected equipment.
  2. Press and hold the mode button you want to assign to the equipment (TV, DVD, or AUX) along with the Enter button. Hold both buttons for one second, and then release. The four mode buttons on the remote control will flash twice to indicate you're in programming mode.
  3. Press the Scan\FF button repeatedly until the equipment turns off, pausing briefly between each button press. The selected mode button will flash once for each press of the Scan\FF key.
    • If the equipment does not turn off, and the selected mode button flashes 8 times, please start over at step 1.
  4. Press the Power button on the remote to turn the equipment back on.

If the equipment does not turn on, you may have pressed the Scan\FF button too many times. Press the Rew\Scan button repeatedly and test the Power button again.

  1. Check the Volume and Mute buttons. If there is a problem with any of the buttons, press the Scan\FF button until the buttons function properly.
  2. Once the buttons are functioning, press the Enter key to save the programming. The appropriate mode key will give a long flash indicating successful programming.

Try this and let us know if it works.

Tried that method and also the one using the Play button, neither worked. In short, I believe I've read all the documentation and tried the methods described.

I am curious if a newer remote might support my device. The codes appear different (4 digit vs 5 digit) and I wonder if a newer remote has better support for receivers. As I stated above my goal is to get volume up/down and mute working on the UVerse remote for my device, but until I can get the AUX programmed and working I don't think the methods for controlling what controls the volume will work.

Thanks. Since the ATT store is out of stock (and wants $20US) I've ordered one elsewhere. Once I've received it and tested to see if I get better results I'll post to this thread for the benefit of anyone else with a similar issue.
