DVR - Getting black screen when hitting play on recorded show
Hello. Sometimes when I hit play on a recorded show I get a black screen. I have to go back to regular tv and hit the recorded tv button again and then it works fine. This just started recently. Is this a sign that my DVR might be dying? Thanks!

@JanIam - could be the DVR is failing.
If the DVR does not see the HDCP tag from the TV on the HDMI interface it will shut the video down.
To eliminate, try component cable (five connections).
If you do not have such a cable amybe you have multiple stereo cables to make five connections. You can get away with just one connection (yellow to yellow to test for video. It will not be HD.
Also, be sure to remove the HDMI cable at the STB/DVR.

@JanIam Has nothing to do w/an HDMI cable, but this might solve it:
If the DVR functions are still not working properly, try a Non-Destructive Disaster Recovery.
Unplug the power cord of the DVR from the back of the box and wait ten seconds. Plug the DVR back in.
When three white dots appear on the screen, unplug the DVR again. Repeat this process two more times.
Plug the DVR back in on the third time and leave in. A gear with a status bar at the bottom of the screen should appear.
If the Disaster Recovery screen does not appear, repeat the steps above. If the Disaster Recovery screen appears, wait until completion.
If the Non-Destructive Disaster Recovery does not work, follow the steps for a Force Disaster Recovery (FDR will erase recordings)
Re-downloads all the software. N-DDR will NOT erase recordings, takes a bit of time or so. I do one every few months to get rid of any bugs in the software. Good luck 😉
Edit: I've had them show a black screen and press Play again and get DVR is working, please wait. Usually then go back to Recordings and it'll start right up then.

My Arriss DCX3600M DVR would intermittently fail to record NBC. Just NBC. Black screen when playback. I could watch that channel but not record, or rewind while live. Rebooting the DVR would succeed for several days but then fail unpredictably. I replaced the DVR and had the exact same issue. Spectrum tech visited and replaced some corroded connectors and installed an amplifier. Good for a week then no joy. I would reboot every couple days but that was a hassle. Workaround: I installed a $15 digital timer switch between the DVR and the wall outlet and programmed it to be always on except for 3:05am to 3:10am every day. Therefore my DVR reboots every day without any more of my involvement. Mystery not solved but this satisfies my needs.

Does this happen on the tv attached to dvr? or does it happen on all tvs set top boxes? I've had this caused on wireless stb's that have a weak signal or aren't working properly.

I have only one dvr connected to a TV. Other TVs have DTAs so cannot record or rewind. All are cabled, none wireless.

@raulk You must have directv then? this is the forum for legacy at&t u-verse tv you need to go to the directv forum. All u-verse set top boxes can record and rewind. Your system is completely different and has nothing to do with OP.
