Can't watch on more than 1 receiver anymore

The other night I went to bed and went in our bedroom and turned on the receiver, I got a message for something like I have used up the allotted receivers and can't watch on that one. I had my wife turn off the down stairs one and I got the channel I was on. I had her turn the downstairs one back on and she got the message. I turned off the bedroom one and she got her channel back. My daughter says she hasn't been able to watch TV for months, almost the beginning of the year, so she has been using her Firestick.

I wish I would have known about that earlier I would have called in, granted this I noticed about a month ago and it took me this long to do something about it. Just getting my bill and seeing I am getting charged for 3 receivers made me think, "do something, that is $30.00 wasted each month if we can't use them all at the same time!"

There aren’t any restrictions on number of concurrent streams you can watch AFAIK. Any changes to how everything is connected inside the residence?

No, everything has been hooked up the same for the last year.

Good standard question:  Have you rebooted anything?  DVR?  STB?  Gateway?  Do you know how to do a whole house reboot?

We have tried rebooting some of the units. No, I do not know how to do a whole house reboot.

Whole House Reboot:

Pull power from DVR first either by pulling the power from the wall or pulling the power cord from the back of the DVR.  Do the same with all STBs (receivers)

Next pull the power from the gateway (same as above).  Wait 30 secs.  Return power to gateway.  Allow all lights to come on.

Return power to DVR first.  Allow it to become functional.  Once it does, return power to each STB individually, allowing each to come on before moving on.  Check to see if the system is now working correctly (4 streams).

With U-Verse, I believe there still are. I can only do four streams into my house, all of which can be HD. I believe the newest DVR allows for six streams (not sure if into house or two additional into DVR for recording purposes.)

Some customers may be limited to fewer than 4 HD streams, but additional (up to 4 total streams) in SD.

Yes, U-verse has always had a limited number of streams.  You can view the number of streams allowed from any TV Receiver:

Menu > Options > System > System Information > System resources

Streams: a SD/b HD (WAN); c SD/d HD (Ingress)

Bandwidth cap: gggggggggggg (WAN); xxxxxxxxx (Ingress)

Egress Profile: nnnnnnnnnn, e SD/f HD

The letters a, b, c, d, e and f represent your stream capacity.

Your home can receive a SD channels and b HD channels.

Your DVR can handle c SD channels and d HD channels.

Your DVR can play for remote TV Receivers e SD channels and f HD channels.

g is your download/downstream capacity in bits per second.

Tell us what the block says (make sure to include all the highlighted numbers)

It could be you have a bandwidth issue that has lowered your stream capacity.  Or I've heard of it be lowered for no particular reason and you have to call, get them to understand your problem, and fix it.

Then you should be able to watch/record up to 4 streams simultaneously.  Note that recording a stream counts.  Watching a recording does not count against your limit.  Sometimes at the hour, when shows change over, the DVR is recording the end of one show and the beginning of another.  (BTW, yours looks exactly like mine.)

If you are not getting four streams (after taking into account recording), then do the whole house reboot as described above by skeeterintexas.

Also make sure that the receiver or DVR turns off when not in use. It took me a while to learn to keep the remote still when turning the equipment off, although I think it's not as sensitive as it once was.

What I meant is if the customer is using the Fire TV to watch U-verse, or a smartphone or tablet, there aren’t restrictions to how many concurrent sessions can be active.  Yes, the settop box hardware does have a limit and is allocated to either viewing live or recording programs, typically a maximum of 4.

We just use the 4 receivers. We were watching regular TV on 1 of them and the other 3 were off. I went to the upstairs one to watch TV and it said I couldn't because we were out of receivers or something to that effect. While the upstairs one was on and saying that, we turned off the downstairs one and the upstairs started to work. We then tried the downstairs one and got the same message. We then turned the upstairs one off and the downstairs one started to work.

Did you do the reboot specified in skeeter’s post?

  1. As gr8sho asked, have you done the whole house reboot?
  2. When you say "the other 3 were off" do you mean the TVs or the Receivers were off as well?  There's a big difference.
  3. Did you account for any recordings and/or series recordings going on?
  4. Can you give use the exact message?

1) No I hadn't tried the whole house reboot as of yet.

2) When I say the other 3 were off, the TV's were off and the receivers were off also.

3) There were no recordings going on at the times it was happening.

4) I can't give exact message. I tried again today and everything seems to be working properly. I am able to turn on all 4 receivers on different channels.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions. I will print off the whole house reboot instructions and if it happens again I will copy down what exactly the error message is and try the whole house reboot.
