Sometimes, it's possible to get boxes for free via promotions. I have two wireless receivers I'm paying nothing for, but I've also been with U-Verse since 2008, so things may be different for long-term customers.
However, if you don't need DVR access on certain TVs, look into a streaming device like a Roku or Firestick. You'd have to download apps for each channels, but it would save money. It's great for TVs in kid or guest rooms.

No any boxes you buy are technically stolen as in not returned. Uverse boxes are leased not sold.

You're not really leasing the boxes. You're paying a fee for content to be viewed on an additional TV.
