8-Port Gigabit Ethernet Unmanaged switch Netgear

My Universe installer installed one of these and everything worked great for the last 2 years.  There was a lightning strike in our area and network switch would not power up.  I replaced the network switch and moved one wire at a time from one switch to the other with the power off.  Now that it is replaced I have a green flashing Ethernet on one line but none of the other 5 like there was before it was replaced.  This switch supplies 2 dvr's that worked before and no longer work.  I used a Netgear GS108 I purchased from best buy to replace the one installed by Att.   Is there anything special I need to do for this to work?  Is this model ok? There was a more expensive model 79.95 vs 39.95.  The Netgear GS108 is registered with Netgear.

2 dvr? Didn’t think that was possible

The GS105 and GS108 are what AT&T uses.  The GS108PE is likely the one you saw for $79.99 and adds management and PoE features, neither of which are required for AT&T U-verse TV Receivers.

If there was lightning damage to the Ethernet switch it is not unlikely that the switch transmitted too much electrical energy to devices connected to it, e.g. the TV receivers, and that they have been at least partially damaged as well.  Have you tried connecting each of them directly to a port on the Gateway to see if they work in that configuration?

One is likely just a receiver.

That is what I read that it was not possible.  I don't now he did it there are a total of 6 ports used with only one for Internet Location, One for Router, 1 DVR for sure.  3 others I am unsure but believe 1 DVR and 1 Phone.   Possibly 1 to external source?

So I ran a cable direct from the DVR to the Gateway and the DVR is still not working.   Also ran a cable Direct Gateway to receiver and it also did not work.   The two WIFI receivers are fine because they weren't physically connected to the Universe line coming in the house (guessing that's what the lightning hit).   Thank You for your help right now I really still don't know why the lines are not lit on the switch except to say I probably don't have one good piece of equipment left that was attached to it.  Xbox is also fried and one TV.   Seems like there should be some kind of surge protector on that line incoming Universe Line .  :(

Normally the NID is grounded and the electrical surge from the storm should bleed off there.

Thanks Again. I guess I will have to wait until Tuesday Morning when the technician comes to figure it out.  Hopefully it is better than I think it is.  I invested in having an electrician and an ATT tech wire everything for Universe, Antenna, Cable and Wired Internet before I finished my basement so everything is behind the walls or in the ceiling.  Fortunately most of the family is on vacation so I can steal a wireless receiver for my living room .  It will work though I already know I would not have Universe or Cable if it wasn't for the DVR.

U-Verse is not cable.

That was 4 items I listed.  There is commas between them.  I did modify the last sentence for you though.

I believe you may have been using "cable" as a generic term for Video Service, which we're not on board with.  In our dictionary, "cable" means CATV.  AT&T is not CATV.

Well, hey, it’s universe cable!!!

All kidding aside, I’m a big believer of putting equipment of this kind on battery backup.

It's been a while since it's been called "universe" around here.

The Netgear switch had solved the problem, but all the equipment that was attached to it was destroyed by the lightning and that is why none of the lights lit up except the one going in.  Some of the equipment looked like it was working even though it wasn't.  Technician said he never saw equipment damaged that way. Thank You for your help.

There are some very old websites that suggest that AT&T simply unplugged the hard drive from DVRs and sent those out as receivers. The sites suggest that if a user knew what they were doing, they could simply open up the receiver, plug the hard drive back in and away they go.

I don't believe that for one second, considering that all my receivers were different models from my DVR.

@darwinh11

Sorry to hear about the extensive damage.
They say lightning never strikes twice.  😄
