They haven't announced or said anything about actually DISCONTINUING UverseTV.  They have stopped selling it and are pushing DirecTV & DirecTV Stream hard.

Is there any advantage to switching to Direcrtv stream?

Some of the advantages of DirecTV Stream are that it's portable, that means you can pick it up and take it where ever you are, in the US of course. Also, it's a completely wireless service, which means no ugly coax cables running through your walls. You can even use your own devices, such as ROKU, Amazon Firestick(2nd Generation), Apple TV. You have unlimited DVR space on the cloud. The list goes on and on. 

So why not take a look at DirecTV Stream for yourself? If you make that choice, you can order the service right online. One more thing, after you place your order the service starts. There is an app that you can download from your app store(Google Play or iTunes) and you can start using it as soon as you complete your order.

The only advantages are that of portability as ATTHelp said, and that you can (theoretically) get up to 20 concurrent streams going.

The disadvantages are pretty substantial, including:

- Unicast streaming over the Internet (vs Multicast over private network)

- The DVR is in the cloud (which I suppose could be an advantage)

- The DVR will delete recordings when they reach 91 days old.

- You have to pay extra to have more than a couple dozen recordings

- Smaller channel list

bear in mind once you cancel uverse you cant get it back 

There’s another issue I’ve seen others bring up in the channel list which has to do with lack of PBS stations.
