Door to Door Sales Scam - Why Does AT&T Allow This?

I just signed up for Uverse fiber and a person wearing a page and hat purporting to represent AT&T kept knocking on my door saying that he was "following up" on AT&T fiber in my neighborhood. When fiber was installed, the rep stated that someone would be by to bury the lines so I thought this was related. Turns out he was being deceptive and trying to sell me fiber which I already owned (apparently he didn't see the orange flags or didn't care). This service is not cheap. I would like someone at AT&T to follow up and explain how this is allowed to happen and why AT&T allows third parties to do this. Thanks in advance.

Hi @emory7!

Thank you for reaching out to us, let us shed some light on Door to Door reps!

To get started, Door to Door sales representatives are not AT&T employees, they are independent contractors. If your city or town requires a permit for Door to Door sales, please ask to see it. If you feel disturbed by them, please put a "No Soliciting" sign on your front door.

Your feedback is appreciated and will be forward to the appropriate department. Please feel free to reach back to us if you need anything else!

Thank you for choosing AT&T!

Hi Yetty,

Thanks for your response. Yes, I know that they were not AT&T employees and we do have "no solicitations" signs posted.

These independent contractors are generating new customer sales for AT&T so in the future, why not raise the standard and require them to obey community rules and not represent themselves as AT&T?

Sincerely,

emory7

Hi, there are two people knocking on my door again today saying that they "work" for AT&T. The tried to argue that they are not soliciting but doing a "comparison." How can I get these "AT&T representatives to stop knocking on my door?

Please have someone contact me immediately as this is getting out of hand!

no one will contact you based on your post this is a customer forum the responsibility of the third party falls on the 3rd party not at&t  they are no different than someone standing out in front of walmart   they have permission and a permit but if they are out of line its not walmarts responsibility its the company that employs these people.in the meantime just say not interested and close the door

ATT condones the shady practice of the contractors or they would not use 3rd party contractors.  They turn a blind eye to the deceptive practice because the contractors generate sales. Furthermore more, my parents were already signed up with ATT and the contractor opened a new account  in my father’s name. My parents are 86 and 90 and they thought the contractor was just trying to help them save money.  It was all very confusing and if we hadn’t caught it in time their phone number of 50 + years would have been changed.  The guy made a 30$ charge to their discover card to give himself a “tip”. It was actually something to cover the cost of the unnecessary change he made .  Now they have 2ATT bills and it’s a huge process to get it straight. My parents would never have been able to figure it out. I have been an ATT customer for 15+ years and they say I’m valuable but they allow their own customers to be taken advantage of by contractors and then blame the customer for making the changes.  I think it’s shameful at the least; it’s deceptive and ATT says they can protect their customers from scam phone solicitors but turns a blind eye to their own scam door to door solicitors.  It would not continue if ATT had consequences for the contractors instead of blaming their customers for making the change.

Today's door to door salesman represented himself as an AT&T employee - I asked him that question directly. When I pointed to the "No Solicitors" sign by my front door, he just smiled and continued his pitch. This happens about every 3 months, and these "employees" do not put a good face on AT&T.

I have had my day interrupted 4 times from these ATT people, with two girls coming to my home TWICE in the same day. I've told them 'not interested' and the last lady in hijab rang the doorbell next door after I and the home owner next door told her she was the 3rd to disturb us. She said she didn't care and proceeded to the next house, who also said they'd had 3 visits already. Short of a shotgun at the door, what has to happen to stop this harassment?  and yes... I have 'no solicitation' on my gate.
