According to this website you should send the request via certified mail.

Pay for Delete

You can negotiate with the collector to have the account removed from your credit report in exchange for payment. Send the collector a letter stating your interest in paying the account. Offer to make payment if the collector agrees to remove the entry from your credit report. If the debt collector agrees, ask for a signed copy of the letter to you to seal the agreement. (Sample Pay for Delete Letter.)

If you negotiate a pay for delete over the phone, make sure you get the agreement in writing before you make a payment. Don't make payment based only on an oral agreement.

Send all correspondence to the debt collector via certified mail with return receipt requested.

That way, you have proof if there's ever a question about whether the debt collector received your mail.

After you've paid the collection, check your credit report to make sure the entry has been deleted. If not, dispute it and provide the credit bureau with a copy of your agreement with the debt collector and proof of payment.

Any attorney will tell you:  Get it in writing.

I spoke to an ATT rep and was told to pay them directly and they would remove the collection from the bureau. I paid them in full and the rep today said to contact the collection agency. I did not get a written agreement. Since I paid ATT directly the collection agency did not get a commission so I don't think they will do me any favors.
The rep I spoke to first assured me ATT would remove the collection. His name is Mathew and he works in Springfield MO. Can I try to reach him?

Thanks

Were you able to get the collection agency to remove this from your credit report?

Unfortunatly if you have already paid then chances are they will not remove it, they got the money so no motivation to offer a pay for delete. AT&T can not remove the mark on your credit especially since  they sold the debt.

My payment was never sent through by att. Do I now have a chance to request pay for delete?

It doesn't matter HOW your account got in arrears.  Collections is collections.
