DirecTV Stream works fine on our Roku devices. What exactly happens when you try to load DirecTV Stream App on your Roku?  Which Roku device?

I do have another old Vizio tv but the Directv stream was installed with a fire stick; so in this new “smart tv” I cannot have the directv stream unless I download it with a fire stick?

That's correct. Unless your Vizio Smart TV supports a native DirecTV Stream you'll need an external streaming device, like FireStick or Roku. And, note, that most Smart  TV manufacturers do a poor job of support apps like DirecTV Stream, so you're better off with a modern streaming device.

As people have been noting, it doesn’t have to be a FireStick or other FireTV device - it can be any of the devices from the “compatible” list. If you already have a Roku, it should work fine, as long as it isn’t too old (it’s probably ok if you bought it new within the last 5 or 6 years).

However, while the user interface apps for different devices are pretty similar, they aren’t identical, so if that is a concern for you, you might be better off with 2 of the same brand.  One other issue is that the last time I checked, the version of the app for FireStick still didn’t support pause/rewind/fast forward for “live TV”, while Roku and the others do. I assume they will eventually add that to the Fire version, but no clue as to when.

I have a Vizio Smart TV, and I think the Direct TV Streaming Device is well worth buying.  It may cost you $120, but it, in combination with the first-class remote that comes with it, it does absolutely everything you could want to do extremely well.  If only, Direct TV Stream, customer service worked half as well.  You can install ANY app found on Google Play to your Direct TV Streaming Device.

My biggest question is why a company that can get its streaming TV system to work this well . . . cannot get its own website to work.  AT&T is not exactly a newcomer to this sort of thing.

I tried unsuccessfully to get the Prime Video app to work on my Vizio Smart TV, but I may try it again for next season's Thursday Night Football from the Direct TV streaming device and see if that makes a difference.  I find that the YouTube TV app works significantly better from the Direct TV Steaming Device than from my Vizio Smart TV, itself.

It IS strange that Direct TV stream has not made an app available to Vizio TVs.

Vizio is apparently a strange beast - they apparently don't have native apps as such, but cast from the providers servers.  I don't know how complex that would be for DTV to implement.  That said, there are other platforms that would likely be higher priority for them to add (or improve) and from my point of view there are a list of functional enhancements (applying to all platforms) that I'd consider more pressing than adding any new platforms.  But YMMV.

Unfortunately we didn't know that we needed a streaming device to stream with Direct TV stream. It would have been nice to the man I spoke with on the phone at Direct TV streaming service, would have told us this!  It only connects to my phone and then I have to try or hope that it will connect to the TV, but that is only the apps I already have been paying for. If anyone knows what kind of device I need, please let me know. Also, I read that they will rent you a device? Now, I don't know if this is true, but I will be calling back when they open tomorrow. I'm not sure if they are open on the weekends, saying it online, doesn't always make it so.

Get the DirecTV Streaming device.  You can buy it for $120 or $10 per month until it's paid for.  While this might seem expensive, it is a VERY good device and, along with the accompanying remote delivers a FLAWLESS streaming experience.  You can also download any app from Google Play to the device and vastly improve the streaming experience of your other apps and use it in the future to do so, regardless of whether you choose to keep DirecTV Stream.  I highly recommend it!

Sales, customer service, and tech support ARE all open on the weekends.  Sales is dishonest, customer service, including their website, is incompetent, but tech support is mostly good.  Overall, I rate the DirecTV technology a 5 and customer service a 1, averaging out to a 3, but once you get these issues ironed out, you will enjoy what I believe to be the best streaming experience in the business.

Obviously, this is all just my humble opinion, having been a DirecTV customer only since the first of this year.

Any supported streaming device like a Roku, Fire Stick, or Apple TV will work. It's just a personal choice.
