Which service are you referring to? If it is DirecTV Stream (or DirecTV satellite, for that matter), that is unrelated to AT&T - they have been separate companies for a year and a half, and unless you got a DirecTV device before then, it shouldn't say AT&T on it.
Assuming that you have DirecTV Stream (because that is the topic of this forum) and you have a DirecTV branded streaming device - it uses DirecTV codes (same as the satellite STBs), So if your LG remote is a universal type that can control STBs, you should set it to use DTV codes, which I would assume it would support. (If it is a learning remote, then why it can't learn the codes would seem to be an LG problem.)
I have direct tv stream. They have informed me that the box is controllable only by the original remote. The codes cannot be learned by any other remote, be it a tv or universal remote. That really (Edited per community guidelines).
That's not entirely true. I have a Samsung TV and when you plug something into an HDMI input---the TV detects the device and sets up the TV remote to control some of the Directv Stream box commands. I can also manually program each input and choose what device is plugged in. ...Not sure why you wouldn't want to use the Dtv Stream box remote. I like it better than my TV remote plus there is a voice search button.

Not true. Works fine with my Logitech Harmony remotes.
I think they are wrong. Proper programmable remotes like pronto or harmony can certainly learn those codes, in fact the codes for the stream remote are the same as the directv remotes for satellite. I am pretty sure litzdog is using a harmony to control his stream device. I use a pronto for my sat boxes,
What is true is that most TV remotes do not have the codes for the directv boxes.
I had purchased a sofabaton universal remote. It would not learn the channel codes from the direct tv stream remote, so i returned it. My new oled lg tv likewise does not learn the channel codes. Is there a trick I’m missing?
I'm not familiar with the sofabaton. With the Logitech Harmony I simply selected "DirecTV" as the hardware. All recent DirecTV satellite and stream boxes use the same infrared remote codes.
Sofabaton does indicate that they support the DTV Stream device. I have a U1, but had never tried it with the DTV device. I just did - it can't "learn" from the stock remote, but you can set it with the app (they have entries for both DirecTV and DirecTV Stream - I used the latter). However (based on only a very quick check, so some of this may be wrong), there are issues. The remote doesn't have the same buttons as the stock remote, and figuring out what they mapped to what isn't completely obvious, and some things don't appear to have a mapping at all. The app does allow you to "customize" the layout - I haven't tried that yet. As I noted, you can't use the "learning" feature in this case because the stock remote uses BT rather than IR for the buttons you'd care about. I also found the numeric buttons often repeat (pressing a 2 gets 22), but not always - I normally don't use those on the U1 since I generally use it on devices that don't use numeric input, so I don't know if this is a problem with my (very early) remote or a bug in their code for the DTV device.
And the obvious caveats - the Sofabaton won't support voice control and - even though it does have BT - I don't believe it can control the DTV device over BT.

The Directv Stream box can also be controlled with a Directv Satellite remote. You could just use the codes for Directv Satellite .....
