The importance of setting Gemini time correctly.

Yesterday we kept getting "we are aware of this issue and are working to resolve it. RETRY", message # 50001-001."

I checked the Internet and all was working.  I was going through the setting and my wife asked why the time shown on the screen was totally wrong - it was off by many hours.

I got into the setting for time and noticed it was set to manual and changed it to get the time from the network.

Immediately the Gemini box time got updated to the correct time and the box started working correctly.  The error message went away, everything was good.

So my question is:  Did my setting the time fix this issue or was that a coincidence?

Yes, error 50001-001 can also appear in Gemini devices, though this error is common on iOS and tvOS devices. Also, correcting the Gemini device's date and time can fix common streaming issues. We appreciate your patience. Claudine, DIRECTV Community Specialist

DirecTV is pretty bad at documenting error codes - in particular I don't think they've ever documented the 5xxxx errors, so there's no clue as to what the error might be.  It is possible that an incorrect time could cause an error (if they try to match the device time to where they think the streaming device is), but since the service works nationwide and we don't know if they do that matching, it isn't clear whether that could be the issue.  (Perhaps if the time is off so far that it doesn't match anywhere in the US service area it could also be a problem.)

In any case, leaving the time to set automatically is almost always the best with any computer (which streaming devices are) that can set its own time.

BTW - when DirecTV supports reps talk about "the DIRECTV app" they (usually) mean a version of the app running on other hardware (Roku, FireTV, etc.) rather than one of the DirecTV devices (Osprey, Gemini, Gemini Air).  But of course those devices also run a version of the DIRECTV app.

Hi, HotWaterJoe. Yes, your device must be set to the correct date and time in order to play video. However, error code 50001-001 is only applicable to the DIRECTV app. Simply restart the app. If restarting the app does not correct the issue, you have to uninstall and reinstall the app. Check out some quick tips here: Fix DIRECTV device issues | DIRECTV Customer Service & Support Let us know if you need additional help. I think I stated the wrong error message.  I think it was “oops something went wrong” code: 50001-001."

The error message appeared on the Gemini box C71KW-400.   Is that the same as the DIRECTV app?

Jrandomuser - thanks for commenting. That makes a ton of sense.

A little more about our situation and usage.  We are "winter Texans" and using DirecTV in our trailer while here in Austin.  We did NOT set Austin as a new home location.  So we are learning what works when we are away from our home.

So far we are extremely pleased with how it all works.  We thought we would get our channel lineup from home but instead we get the local lineup.  And that's OK.  We can access the DVR so anything recorded at our home location is available to us - which works great for us.

Again, thank you for the info.  And I think setting the time did fix the problem.  Not sure why or how it got set so weird but it's fixed now.

It takes awhile to figure out all this stuff.  Having come from over 25 years of Comcast service it's taking me a little time to understand the way this service works.
