In general a Roku or Firestick is fine. Comes down to personal preference.
If you want a more traditional experience, so control over channel numbers, you would need DirecTV's proprietary streaming box C71KW (currently referred to as Gemini).
It is also recommended to not use an app downloaded directly to a 'smart' TV itself. It tends to work poorly compared to a dedicated streaming device, at least when it comes to DirecTV's app.
