Optional Remote Control

the DIRECTV satellite remotes work with DIRECTV stream boxes in IR mode. But, I don’t think there are other ‘optional’ remotes that you can just choose from. A quick Google or Amazon search may show otherwise though as I’m not too familiar with the DIRECTV STREAM system and remote compatibility.

I use a Logitech Harmony remote with my DirecTV Stream box and other AV equipment. Works great 

Basically any (universal or dedicated) remote that supports DirecTV codes and IR should work with the device in IR mode.  None besides the stock remote will support voice control.

I just wish the stock remote had backlit keys.

It does - well, the one I have does.  But they light only when a key is pressed, not when the remote is picked up, and they only stay lit for about 5 seconds after the key press.  Unfortunately, that time is not controllable.
