ONE SOLUTION TO THE DIRECTV STREAM REMOTE CONTROL VOLUME PROBLEM!!
Since subscribing to Directv Stream a few months ago, I have experienced intermittent episodes when the volume and mute functions stop working while everything else continues to work flawlessly. I have spent several hours with DTV Stream technicians using their "remote viewing" in an attempt to correct the problem. We have gone through all of the troublshooting procedures but nothing works.
Last night, I ran across an earlier post from 2 years ago on this Forum describing a simple procedure that has appeared to work for a few of us. I tried it this morning and it worked for me. I am totally mystified as to why the DTV technical support specialists do not begin troubleshooting volume problems with this this simple procedure. In their defense, they do attempt the "Standard" procedure but fail to emphasize one critical part of the process (see Bold comments below).
So here it is, step-by-step (I'm assuming that you've already gone through the initial Setup and have paired your DTV Streaming remote, etc.):
1. Go to Home>Settings>System>Remote and Devices>Program Your Remote>TV.
2. Make sure that Remote Programming is turned ON; Switch Volume Control is set to TV; HDMI-CEC Volume Control is set to Off; and Power Off Devices is set to ON.
3. Click on TV>Standard>and then enter you brand of TV.
4. Using your television remote control, reduce the Volume to 0.
5. A test is provided where you will be asked to report a noticeable volume increase. Do not try to do this with your ears! Instead, look at the TV screen when the sound test is run to see if the previously set "0" volume increases to "1" or more (mine only increased by "1").
6. When/if the volume number increases on your screen, indicate a Yes answer. The program with then test the Mute function, and your finished!
The DTV technicians (now counting 4 of them so far) have failed to emphasize that the procedure should be performed as explained in items 4-5 above. Instead, I was turning up the volume on my TV and then listening for slight increases with the test. Apparently, the increase can be so slight that it requires observing a visual increase from 0 to 1 or more on the TV screen.
I hope that this slight but very critical modification of the "Standard" method will help those of you who have spent several fustrating months with this this recurring issue. Some, like myself, have resorted to using multiple remotes. I can't take credit for this fix since another participant posted his success story a couple of years ago. I just wanted to provide an update and another success story for a problem that continues to go unanswered by DTV Stream Technical Support. I will also add that something appears to be occurring periodically (such as DTV updates??) that causes your selected TV brand to mysteriously change without any input from you. This could be responsible for the volume to stop working for no apparent reason. Good luck!

You can get to remote and devices... But everything they posted after that is not on there. My remote does not mute and if I hold down the mute button my TV goes black. Direct TV just seems like junk.

@IVY_QUINN I can see all those settings. Remotes/devices-- then choose "program your remote" on the right side of the screen-

How long have you had your Dtv Stream box? Are you sure it's the box you are using--and not an app? Don't understand why you don't see it in the settings menu. Can you take a picture of your settings---remotes devices screen and post it?

The box is connected to my TV. I am not using an app. I have remote and devices screen and can see my remote. Above you all are saying "program my remote"
This is not helping. I am trying to resolve an issue. The issue is NOT the screen but with the Volume and Mute not working correctly. Seems everyone is hung up on the wrong thing here!

@IVY_QUINN You need to program the remote with the brand of the tv. Pairing doesn't setup volume/mute/power. Settings--system---choose remotes & devices then on the right side of the screen choose "program your remote" That is where you program you tv brand into the remote. It's the 3rd choice down after hitting "program your remote"
