Newbie needs some info
I am a fed up Comcast customer. I have 800MPS internet, and today while at the AT&T store upgrading a phone, I looked at AT&T internet and Direct TV. I am concerned about the internet being too slow. It is only 18MPS. This seems really slow. The salesman said we should be getting the opportunity to upgrade to fiber at some point. Can anyone offer any experience with the AT&T internet and Direct TV? I assume I can use any internet provider?

DirecTV or DirecTV Stream? They are 2 different services.
Check out the "DirecTV" service that uses your internet connection here
Check out the "DirecTV Stream" service (BYOD - Bring your own device) here

I am not sure I know the difference, I discussed using a direct TV provided box and then using my smart TVs to download the Direct TV app. Does that provide the answer?

You can only get a box from DirecTV with the DirecTV packages. But there are contracts and fees involved. DirecTV Stream has no fees or contract, but you bring your own device. Make sure you read the info for the differences. You can get the box and use it with the DirecTV Stream service via a 3rd party like eBay, Amazon, etc. Just be careful with the warranty, etc.
Stay away from the Smart TV apps. They are junk and very inferior. Lots of issues with the app. 100's and 100's of posts on the issues. Not all Smart TVs are supported. Most have learned their lesson and stuck with external streaming devices.

I apologize if I already responded. I thought I had but I do not see it. What I discussed was definitely stream. We discussed either using Smart TV apps if it worked, or using fire sticks or ROKU devices. My biggest question is if the internet option ATT offered will be adequate. We do not have Fiber as an option yet, so what they offered was ATT 18, which sounds like 18 MPS, which just sounds really low. Do you have any thoughts on that? I am thinking I may need to keep Comcast internet until something else is available.

Thanks. I am not going with the ATT internet. I am not comfortable taking that kind of drop. I am staying with comcast for internet. Once I get rid of the TVpackages and boxes, 1 G internet is $65 per month, so I am ok with that. It is only 1.2T cap, though. I am not sure what to expect with Direct TV stream. I have seen some calculations that say the 1.2 is not enough. It is another $10 for unlimited, I may just go ahead and do that. Any opinion on whether 1.2T is enough? We average 200 - 220 MB per month when we had Xfinity cable. I just don't have a feel for the streaming load.

I can tell you that DirecTV Stream is very data intensive. Just be aware it loves data.

thanks. Sounds like $10 per month unlimited is worth it.
