Issue with the Gemini device
I recently had DirecTV service installed for my mom's apartment. She has 2 of the Gemini streaming devices. The problem is they seem to go to sleep and the only way I have found to 'wake them' is to just unplug and replug the power input. Simply hitting "ON" on the remote turn on the TV but not the Gemini devices.
Why are they going into a "sleep" mode?

What do you mean sleep? The devices are set to exit after 4 hours of inactivity. You should see a message asking if you are still watching. Is that what you mean?

I explained that the device is not responsive to remote. TV responds to pressing ON but Gemini devices are not putting out steam to HDMI port until they are reset.
Let me add that my mom is turning off the system by just pressing off on the Gemini remote. This just started a few days ago after some type of update by DirectTV.

It seems the issue is that the gemini device is taking longer than previously to connect with the wifi and download. Looks like about 3-5 minutes before the system responds to channel input from the remote.

Reset the device to factory defaults.

I will try resetting the device to factory default. When I visited Mom yesterday both of the gemini devices had gone to sleep and would not wake up. I got the display message that the device was "not connected" to the network and I saw the three options, I forget exactly one was troubleshoot network and the on the far right was "restart device". The only thing that works is restarting device!

The network connection is a known issue with the Gemini device. Many posts on the issue. Not seen a solution outside restarting the device. You might want to search the subject to get familiar with what others have experienced.

Have you tried going into settings---system---device preferences--screen saver---- and then turn off "power saving"

I went and checked on Mom's system early today and this is what she sees on both systems after they are off overnight.
I used the "go to settings" option and reset to factory defaults on both systems. By the time I finished the second one in the bedroom the one in the living was in the process of rebooting itself, I can only guess it had received an update of some sort! I'll check back tomorrow and see how this went.

I've seen that happen but only if my device is off over nite AND my internet modem restarts for some reason...like an outage

So this morning both of the systems had same issue. I called DTV tech support and they suggested a reset of both by using the reset button on the Gemini unit. I did and when I left everything was working fine. But, I've always been able to get the system to work by restarting or power cycle the power input.
I put this system in Mom's apartment at the first of June and this type of behavior started about a week ago. WiFi is provided by an AT&T Gateway/modem which also provides her with VOIP phone service. This is a relatively new modem it was swapped in a few months ago.

I have considered that (adding router) as my next step!
