Is Direct TV Streaming worth switching from Direct TV?

We have Direct TV and it's getting a little costly. Is the Streaming option worth it or is there a lot of problems using it? Is it easy to use for an 83 yr old? What should I be aware  of?

Here’s a whole list of pros and cons for you to read (I wrote this several months ago):

DIRECTV STREAM and DIRECTV satellite both have their pros and cons.

The pros of DIRECTV satellite are that you don’t need high speed internet for fast and reliable satellite TV, you can bring your TV ANYWHERE you go with a portable dish setup (i.e. camp, RV, boat, SUV), all recordings do not have an expiration date being that they were recorded via satellite, there are features like PiP (not on HS17 newest receiver), and the remote in my

opinion is much easier to use for most people than DIRECTV STREAM. Though, you are able to use a DIRECTV satellite remote WITH a DIRECTV STREAM Osprey Box.

The pros of DIRECTV STREAM are that there are no extra fees (DVR fee, HD fee, advanced receiver fee, TV access fee) so your bill is less expensive than if you went the DIRECTV satellite route. Additionally, you don’t pay extra for each additional streaming device (DTV satellite requires $7 for each additional TV), there is no price hike the second year, your TV won’t go out in inclement weather, and DIRECTV STREAM is overall more ‘portable’ as far as phones, tablets, and streaming devices than DIRECTV satellite is.

Now, for the cons. DIRECTV satellite does go out in bad weather, it requires coax to be run to each receiver (unless of course wireless Genie mini clients), you must have a dish mounted to your home or ground to receive service, there are extra fees as stated before, there is a price hike the second year, and all equipment is leased so it must be returned upon cancellation.

DIRECTV STREAM requires a good internet connection at every streaming device (poor connection results in buffering, audio and video issues, pixelating, etc.), you must purchase a streaming device like a Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, or DIRECTV STREAM Osprey Box at every location, some channels like NFL network aren’t offered on DIRECTV STREAM, and your recordings have an expiration date so they don’t last ‘forever’ as do on DIRECTV satellite

I was a Dtv Stream subscriber for 15yrs. I've been with Dtv Stream just over a year and am very happy. Same channels---great picture quality. If it's for an older person make sure to get their Dtv Stream box it comes with a remote with channel numbers, record button, previous channel button, dvr list button, and voice search button. More of a cable tv/satellite box experience.

I had DTV sat since 1996 switched this past December to stream. Have the Osprey DTV stream boxes no issues at all so far. Never buffers and always works.
love that I don’t pay the $30 -$40 in fees I was paying with satellite. No $10 dvr No $10 hd No $3 whole home No $7 receiver fee and no RSN fees.
Also nearly every channel is HD.

Is it difficult to use the RUKU and Fire Stick remotes for channel search?  If you get the DTV Stream device and emote is the a contract?

It is definitely different than what you were used to with DirecTV satellite service. It provides much of the same content but not all and it does not have a local DVR so a pause will only save and allow you to go back a for few minutes of video on your current program. The DVR is in the cloud so anything that you do record is available to be watched from pretty much any computing device that attaches to the Internet, later.  The remote is more simplistic than the satellite ones, if you get the DirecTV stream box(s). and the screen navigation takes some getting used to. It took me about 6 mo. to get the hang of it without looking at the remote. Also, if you get the streaming box then you can use it to access other internet services including other Internet based streaming services, (i.e. Youtube, Hulu, Netflix, etc. ). Note the DirecTV box is not very high performance and tends to operate very, very, very slowly, but it usually works eventually. Oh and It does sometimes reboot on its own when switch apps, mostly.  I use this service on my Cell phone, my tablet, and both my home and work computers. I have also used it on an Nvidia Shield device, which is MUCH MUCH faster than the DirecTV stream box.  FYI.
