Has anybody connected the Optical Audio Output from the DirecTV streaming device to an older Denon AVR?

I tried several times and settings to try connect the directv optical output to my Denon receiver. I just switch from Xfinity to Directv, so I know my receiver can handle optical audio. But no luck so far.

I called support and the person claims I can't hook the optical audio to a receiver. Which Makes No Sense!  The support person was just reading off a script so they probably don't know what's going on. They opened a support ticket and told me it will take about a month for someone to get back to me.

I am hoping someone in this group has successfully connect their optical audio output to a Denon - or similar - receiver. The Denon is a 2003 era AVR (AVR 38003).  It has several audio optical inputs - but none of them are working. It does not support HDMI. As mentioned the Xfinity set-top box optical audio port worked fine on my Denon

I will be very bummed out if it can't be done.

Thanks

Works fine with my Denon AVR-3808 AV Receiver.

What DirecTV Stream "device"? Is this happening with all channels?  Which ones?  What happens if you disable DD5.1 audio in the stream device?

Hi Ace,

Yes, this is happening on all channels.  I assume I have the most up to date Direct Stream Device (I see no other product name/model #) . I just started the service a week ago so it should be the most current configuration.

How does one disable DD5.1?  I have switch between stereo and surround sound modes in setup - is this what you mean?  It makes no difference.

Since the Denon was working with the xfinity settop, I am pretty sure the receiver is correctly configured and working.

I can see the optical cable is lighting up so I assume there is some sort of data coming through - but that's all I can tell. I have no way of testing the data stream.

Any help is appreciated.

So I still don't know if the issue is with my directv streaming box or my Denon AVR.  My AVR is 2003 vintage and has optical audio and did work fine with my xfinity set-top box.  But no luck with the directv optical output.

Nothing should have changed in the Denon settings - I just plugged the new optical output from directv into the optical port that was working. And then tried some other ports. It leads me to believe it's the directv output port.

Is there any way to verify the signal short of buying a new modern AVR which I don't want to do. The Denon is a pain to use - one of the worse interfaces anywhere - but it's got a good analog power amp - and works fine otherwise.

Please - some ideas on what to do. Directv isn't much help - the support person was clueless on what to do and I have not heard back from them on my open service request.

Very disappointing indeed.

Maybe just too old, I don’t know what the box options are, stereo/surround and neither work. Does your tv have an optical input? You said your old xfinity worked, how old and what was signal..take it to a neighbor and test? Sorry
