If you change your service to the DIRECTV via Internet, you can still order the box by picking the package you like and customizing it in the 'Connect via Internet' section at https://www.directv.com/packages/.

In other words - no you can’t.   Unless you buy them from a third party (or reportedly jump through hoops with DirecTV Customer Service and get lucky), you can apparently only get the Gemini devices if you subscribe to “via Internet” rather than “Stream” (and pay those fees).

it appears that DirecTV wants to turn their streaming service into a clone of the satellite service, with fees, dedicated devices, and a pseudo-contract (price lock). We’ll see how that works out for them - apparently they aren’t sure themselves, since they still offer the “traditional” Stream plans, though they are making the Stream webpage harder to find. 

I’ve had DTV satellite since 1996 so I guess I’ll keep calling up asking for discounts and see what I get. I like the programming but they make everything such a giant pain in the (Edited per community guidelines)!

So how can you buy the Gemini boxes (refurbished or new) so can subscribe to the ‘bring your own device’ plan as no way I’ll pay the additional fees if BUY the boxes?

The only way I’ve seen is eBay.

Many people go the eBay route (there may be other 3rd party sources, but I haven't seen them - Amazon generally has the remotes, but I haven't seen the boxes there).  But be careful because there are potentially issues with some used ("refurbished") boxes - see this thread for a discussion.  Bottom line is to make sure you can return to the seller if there are problems.

I ended up getting a significant discount and am sticking with satellite for now. Didn’t want to have to swap out all my equipment and got Total Choice plus HBO MAX and Sports pack for $137 plus tax all in. So $7 more than Directv Stream.That’s with three Gemini boxes.
