Gemini Air audio surround issues, big zero
I have the P21KW-500 (appears to be an ATT-branded chromecast) dongle direct into a new Denon X4800H AVR via HDMI, obviously. The issue is when trying to use Dolby audio. When Dolby is enabled on the dongle, the audio level is very low, like 20-25 dB below stereo content. The AVR will report the incoming audio as 5.1 PCM and it shows all 7 speakers as active, however, the rear surround heights have no audio with any of the upmixers (I'm guessing that has to do with the container). The Gemini will show that DTS, DTS-HD, and Dobly TrueHD are incompatible which is untrue as this AVR decodes everything. As soon as you try to make a change in the advanced audio settings of the Gemini, surround is shut off and it reverts to 2 ch stereo PCM. 2 ch PCM is lame even with the upmixers engaged. It's not the AVR as the Samsung tv speaker audio level is also very low (with the AVR in standby, passing through the gemini A/V)
PQ is great with the 4:2:2: chroma subsampling, HDR, and 12-bit color (my panel is 4K120 and 12-bit), but the surround implementation for home theatres on this dongle is a complete fail.
I also have a chromecast with the DTV app and the audio works as expected with all the codecs functioning properly, however the UI is clunky and PQ is not as good.
So what's the solution for this lame a** surround audio??

So for more context while waiting for the next higher tier support to contact me, my Chromecast with the DTV stream app works just fine, it is direct into the AVR via HDMI. As does the DTV stream app on my Samsung TV, which is connected via eARC to the AVR.

Hello Moodysj, and Direct help,
Did you ever get this issue resolved, I am running into the same problem, Gemini air plugged into Denon receiver, out to LG tv.I can only get a pcm signal, even though I have went into settings and enabled Dolby digital. I also have a roku plugged in, and it gets dolby digital with no problems. Just thought you may have some tips on receiving Dolby digital, and not pcm.

Joejoetime, when you use the info button on the AVR remote, is the input signal 2.0 channel PCM (also in Setup, under General - Information - Audio)? Also are the only sound modes available to select: Stereo, Dolby Surround, and Multi Ch Stereo?

Hi Moody, when I go into setup, general, audio on the denon , it says sound mode is Dolby surround, input signal is PCM, format is 3/2/.1, sample rate is 48khz. When I hit the info button it says signal is PCM, sound is Dolby surround. When I go t the roku which I have plugged into the dvd/bluesray HDMI on the denon and then hit the info button it says sound is Dolby digital, signal is Dolby digital. In the setup menu it says Dolby digital. In the Gemini air menu settings, system, device preferences, display &sounds system sounds is on, advanced sound setting is set to automatic-use device reported formats. Back to device preferences, audio Dolby audio is on. In display &sound advanced you can choose Dolby atmos w/Dolby digital plus, Dolby digital, and Dolby digital plus. I have Dolby digital and Dolby digital plus checked, I do not have atmos. On the front panel of the denon when going through the Gemini air it says surround cbl. When I go through the roku, the front panel says Dolby digital. Sorry for the long post, hope this helps this get resolved.

Joejoetime, which model of Denon do you have? When you press and hold a sound mode button on the AVR remote ("movie" for example) for a few seconds, which sound modes are displayed on the screen for selection? This is only for the Gemini Air as the active input

Hi Moody, the selections I have when pressing movie on the denon remote through the Gemini air are surround cable, multi channel stereo, and stereo. I have the denon AVR X1300W, but I have a new AVR X3800 on the way

Joejoetime, I bought a Denon X4800 to replace my 2113 and the behavior is the same before and after. Maybe you will have better luck

A workaround I have found is to install the DirecTV Stream app on a separate Chromecast pendant. But the picture quality is not as good and the interface is terrible. But the sound quality is great. I also installed the DTV app on my TV, same results as the Chromecast
