DirecTV Stream Device or Amazon FireTV Cube?

What are the Pros and Cons of using the DirecTV Stream Device vs the newest Amazon FireTV Cube? I am stuck in what is called a Multiple Dwelling Unit that recently changed cable providers from Comcast to a very basic kinda-sorta DirecTV service that is third-party provided and limits us to just 41 channels. Apparently, the proposal to get what is called a "satellite overlay" is not going to happen because the owner will not install even one dish antenna. Using the FCC's OTARD regulation to install my own dish on a 2nd floor balcony is going to cost a fortune in attorney fees, so my only option is streaming. I have no clue what I am getting in to with streaming. I have had a FireTV stick for years but have used it only for the SiriusXM music app. It is a 1st generation Stick so I know I should upgrade it for TV streaming.

Aside from what differences I might find between the two devices, any other heads-up-you-need-to-know-this or other advise you can give this streaming rookie will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance!

Hello @DaveM4210, let us help you with all your inquiries.

At the moment, the option to storage the recorded shows is through Cloud DVR, since this allows you to save more shows to enjoy in a later time with the Unlimited DVR feature.

In order to watch the recorded shows, it is necessary to have an Internet connection to watch them on your out-of-home devices.

Last but no least, the DIRECTV STREAM service is attached to your name, so you do not need to worry if MDU management changes providers, the service will remain yours.

Learn more about Record and watch shows with cloud DVR.

We'll be happy to help you if you need additional assistance, just let us know.

Do the free trial and make the judgement for yourself. Only you can determine if the service is right for you.

You will need to buy a new device to be able to stream Directv Stream as the Fire Stick 1st gen is not compatible with Directv Streaming it would have to be 2nd Gen or higher.  But if you do decide to stream and you want a more cable/Sat experience I would recommend buying the Directv Streaming box because it is more user-friendly than the Fire Stick/Cube.  The remote has channel numbers on it so you can change the channel more easily and you can access your recorded content easier you can even use voice to control the remote which controls your tv and viewing which no other streaming devices do.  You can buy these refurbished through Directv Stream for $49.99 and you get a 1-year warranty for your device.  Or you could buy a brand new one for $120.00 which you can pay outright for or have it broken down for $5.00 a month for 2 years and you also get a 1-year warranty also.

@Tiger593 Sounds good to me and makes sense.

Next question...does the DirecTV Streaming Device include a local DVR instead of having to use "cloud DVR? One of my current problems is loss of about 400 hours of shows on the DVR, including several that had been purchased from PBS. I lost a lot of shows recorded during the summer with intentions of watching them this winter. Does DirecTV Streaming provide a way to retain purchased content for offline viewing. And is there a way to continue using the DVRed shows if the MDU management decides to change serive providers again?

Thank you!

@DIRECTVhelp That is the best news I have heard in in the last 3 1/2 weeks. Winner Winner TV Dinner! DirecTV Streaming will cost me double what I was paying, but the peace-of-mind for never ever having to change TV service providers again will be worth some $$. I will share the contents of this forum thread with other residents, so DirecTV may gain a few more customers from this "seniors" apartment facility.

Thank you!

@rbachalo01 - You should start a new thread for your issue.  It is off topic for this thread, and a new thread with an appropriate subject line is more likely to get attention.
