Are you a DirecTV Stream customer already?
You can buy DirecTV Stream devices at places like Walmart and activate them yourself, just like any compatible streaming device (Roku, FireStick, etc.).

Actually, if you are a "DirecTV Stream" subscriber, the device is not even available for you to purchase from DirecTV. You have no choice but to purchase from a 3rd party. The device is only available for DirecTV Via Internet subscribers, which requires a 2-year subscription.
