Problem with remote

Here lately I’m having trouble with my remote responding to the tv. I’ve changed the batteries twice. I have to hold the on button for at least 10 seconds before the box and the tv comes on. Changing the channels is a crap shoot? Is my system too old and I need an upgrade? If I do need an upgrade are you providing it without charging me? What’s the deal?
