Newsmax Removal

I called Directv a few days ago when I heard that Newsmax may go off the air in order to find out the situation and leave my thoughts on the matter.  At the time, I was told that Newsmax would go off the air at 9:00 pm pst on Tuesday night if an agreement wasn't reached in time, but that Directv would continue to negotiate to come to a resolution to hopefully restore Newsmax as soon as possible.  Now I see on Channel 349 that Newsmax is not only back, but is being replaced already.  Are negotiations still taking place?

Directv says that the reason Newsmax is off the air is that Newsmax wanted carriage fees.  Directv admits that many other cable news networks, including those rated lower than Newsmax, receive carriage fees from Directv.  So why is Directv refusing to pay Newsmax specifically?  They say it is because they would have to pass the carriage fee on to the customers.  I already pay a hefty monthly premium to have Directv instead of other options.  Where is that subscriber money going that they can't afford to pay carriage fees for one network that has a great deal more viewership now than when their prior contract was negotiated?

The bottom line here is that Directv is going to lose my business, and likely that of a number of other subscribers, if they refuse to carry Newsmax.  They tell me that I can just watch Newsmax for free at the Newsmax website.  I was already aware of that, but prefer the features and ease of watching my programming on Directv.  However, if Directv wants to encourage more "cord cutters" to seek alternate options rather than using their programming, perhaps I should take them up on their suggestion and cut the cord.

I do hope that Directv will come to their senses, pay Newsmax a market rate carriage fee, and bring the channel back as soon as possible.  If not, Directv will be losing a long-time customer.

All TV providers pay the channels to carry them and when the contracts come up for renewal all the channels want more money so they have to hash out the best amount that raises the customer bills the least amount.  It appears that newsmax has decided that DTVs offer is not good enough and stopped talking so DTV is replacing it.

Is that official that Directv is no longer negotiating?  Very disappointing.

AT&T will be adding FirstTV (F1rst TV) to the lineup soon and it's even more right leaning than Newsmax.

Yes, I mentioned that on a post yesterday that “The First” is being added…as for “more right leaning” I’ve no idea, but look forward to at least two of the people there who I know are people I can trust and want information from.

Still, what DirecTV is doing is censorship.  The article I posted shows where they are not doing right by Newsmax, and promoting an idea that they are negotiating with them that Newsmax denies is happening.

Again, not everyone has free streaming anyway..

@skeeterintexas Dropping a highly rated network and adding a new one with no following is not exactly equivalent.  The bottom line seems to be that Directv is willing to pay carriage fees to news networks unless they seem to have a conservative lean.  I hope I'm wrong and that Directv is still negotiating, but the fact that they're already replacing Newsmax in the channel lineup isn't a good sign.

It's over and now gone. Time to move on and vent in peace. Any comments at this point is just blowing in the wind.

@bcbsncjlj Someone should tell that to Directv service employees.  They directed me to the forum and indicated that using the forum was a way to communicate thoughts to Directv since the forums are monitored.  If it really is over as appearances suggest, Directv should be honest about it with their customers.

BCBSNCJ-Looks like a lot of customers are  “Over and now gone” too!  They will move on in peace-to another provider.

I don’t know what anyone else thinks but some of these people here who have the clause saying they don’t work for the company sure sound like they do!  What do you care Juniper (or anyone else saying to stop) if anybody keeps posting about it or not? They paid their fee to have the service and have a right to say what they feel, especially if DIRECTV is telling them to go here and complain.

@AhWhite-

Just curious, are you able to get Fox News using those devices? I have Fox Nation through my streaming, but it’s not the same as having the news of course.  Thanks.

Thanks.  The other thing that concerns me is sports – but I guess you would get your local network channels from one of those devices. I actually have the NFL basic streaming (not sure of actual name) where you can see games that are blacked out once they are already aired. When they’re over it’s recorded.  Helped us out a lot this year😀

The above was directed to AhWhite, just to be clear.

Streaming options are not available for people that live rurally.  Plus when you stream you cannot record for later viewing, or easily pause, rewind, or forward.  That's why I am changing to Dish in light of the censorship of Newsmax by Directv.

@johnnynick  Using TIVO OTA you can record any over the air programing. They even have a skip feature which allows the TIVO to "skip" commercials.
