Got a weird call saying it was Directv?

Yes, absolutely. If the caller ID is suspicious, it most certainly is. Most callers are from India or Nigeria and claim to be from DIRECTV. They are aware of your account details (sometimes they ask for the 4 digit passcode) and offer a bogus deal essentially giving the customer 50% off their bill which includes premiums like HBO for free. After the customer is enticed, the scammer then finishes by asking for an upfront payment in gift cards to qualify for the discount. When the customer falls victim to the scam and buys gift cards, the channels like HBO are then turned ON, but only for a few days. The scammer turns them on by getting access to the customer’s online account. 

After a few days, the scammer wants more gift cards for the discount to ‘continue’ going. At this point, the average customer is aware of a scam and calls the real DIRECTV to find out the truth.
