I do agree with you. Doesn’t seem like there’s any technical reason this couldn’t work. The people that run U-verse TV to this day continue to (Edited per community guidelines)icit feedback for the app including what things we would like to see improved, and ironically watching DVR programs is one of the choices. Not sure why they bother as this is window dressing for a dead corpse.
On demand content on U-verse is very limited these days but your U-verse TV subscription entitles access to the source network and their apps typically have a good on demand selection. It’s not as convenient as your DVR, but then again the new age is to watch on demand. For me personally TCM is an excellent example. I watch movies when I can through their app. Recorded programs I’d like to manage would be local news. There are other (Edited per community guidelines)utions to this as well.
My suggestion is whatever decision you ultimately make shouldn’t be based at all on the app because it was an afterthought and att never really stood behind it. It’s there to use and if it works, great, but have a problem and you’re (Edited per community guidelines). Cheers.

The ability to watch recordings remotely from your Uverse DVR has never been an option.

We are here to help, @RiclunAol.
Thank you to @skeeterintexas for the useful information.
As he stated, you can not watch recordings from your DVR on the U-verse app. You can only watch live TV and On Demand on the app.
Let us know if have any other questions or concerns.

Then switch to Xfinity. You cannot with U-verse TV. Just remember you can't switch back, because U-verse TV isn't accepting new subscribers.
