TV picture cuts off after watching for awhile

My TV is on HDMI 2. I can be watching TV and all of a sudden it loses the picture.  I then have to use the remote, open the HDMI menu at bottom, select #2 again and the picture comes back on. It’s like it kicks out the TV/picture from HDMI and you have to go back and re select it to continue watching TV. Very frustrating when you’re watching a program.
Thank you

When you have to reselect HDMI 2, was something else selected, i.e. I'm envisioning that your TV has shifted to some other input than HDMI 2.

If so, what input is selected instead?

And what is connected to that input?

Thanks Jeff. Last night it said the DVD was selected but when I do open the menu to select getting it back on to the HDMI 2 port, no other HDMI is highlighted. So again it appears it just kicks it out of #2 but doesn’t switch it to another HDMI even though it said “DVD”.

Do you have a DVD player connected?  Can you disconnect it for long enough to see if that makes the issue go away.

We can try that. If that does the trick, does that mean the DVD is old/bad? We haven’t had the TV for very long. It’s a new OLED and we are still trying to learn all the bells and whistles.
Thanks for your comments and troubleshooting. I’ll return if this continues.

TVs now have a feature where they will switch to newly active inputs, assuming that if you just turned on your XBOX, or DVD player, that you'll want to see a picture from it.  And there's also CEC which means devices can signal the TV via the HDMI interface to switch inputs.

I had this issue with a Wii U; it would randomly cause an HDMI switch to toggle to its input (even though it wasn't in use); it wasn't the TV itself, but the HDMI switch connected to the TV, but the result was the same.

Ok good to know. How did you fix the Wii problem then?

Switched the Wii U from the switch to another TV HDMI input (the TV wanted CEC signaling to switch inputs).

Well I guess I’m putting this back out for problem solving. The issue doesn’t seem to be the DVD HDMI port. Tonight we got kicked out again while watching TV. The “error” message asked if we wanted to turn on the top box and if it was already on, check that the cable isn’t loose. Then we got kicked out again and this time it went over to the Apple TV. So not consistent in getting kicked off the network. Any feedback is appreciated.

Hi, @KDM1900, we'd be happy to help you with your TV picture quality.

Are you having trouble solely with your television or with U-Verse? If the problem is with your TV, you may want to contact the manufacturer to see what they suggest.

We'll be awaiting your response.

Thanks. The TV is brand new. The problem is we will be watching TV and it kicks off the picture. Sometimes it says DVD, sometimes it sends it back to Apple TV and most of the time it doesn’t go anywhere. You have to use the remote to get it back to HDMI 2 to get the picture to come back on. I’ve unplugged the DVD, still seems to be a problem.

@KDM1900 We understand the problem you're having, we're just trying to determine if it's being caused by your TV or U-Verse service.

Did this happen on your last TV? If so, this could be a service problem. If not, again, you may want to contact the TV manufacturer. Even brand new products can malfunction sometimes.

It could be an issue with the cable or the input on the TV.  I'd try switching the device ends of the cable between the U-verse box and the DVD player and see if the issue follows the U-verse box or the cable/input.

If the TV switches to the AppleTV and it’s on, then that’s a problem as the AppleTV should stay asleep.  I can make my TV switch to AppleTV simply by pressing the menu button on the remote.  This is what CEC feature is used for.

Ok thanks everyone. I think at this point we’ll contact a service provider and rule out bad cables before we contact the manufacturer.
