NBC DVR recordings randomly adding Descriptive Voice Service (DVS)

So, I've had 3 different shows on NBC that have recorded with DVS on them. I'm not visually impaired, so I've never used this service before. I can't figure out how to turn it off. It only happened with NBC shows. Specifically, it happened with 1 episode each of Law and Order: SVU, Chicago P.D. and State of Affairs. Chicago PD and SVU both recorded with DVS on the same night back on December 10 or 11. It didn't happen after that until December 22 with State of Affairs.

Does anyone have any idea as to what is going on? Can I turn this off? This is incredibly annoying. Calling Uverse tech support yielded no help at all. They gave me a case number and promised to investigate, but I haven't heard back.

Any ideas.

Hello!

I have a reply on this issue finally. Sorry it took so long, holidays and such!

The provider was having an issue with their missing audio descriptors within their stream.  This was resolved per the provider on 12/23.

Are you still having the same issue?

It's Descriptive Video Service, this from Wikipedia:

Another good tutorial on DVS:

They have same problems on Verizon FiOS too:

Seems it's your local NBC station sending the DVS w/the programs, so contact them.  Good luck 😉

Thanks for this. I assumed that it could be the station since it was at random and only on NBC. I've reached out to my local NBC station to assist, but I'm not sure I'll get much help from them.

Regardless, thank you for your help.

Not sure if you read the post in its entirety, but SAP is not at all the issue. Thank you anyways.

Seems they are sending it on one of the l/r channels instead of the SAP channel.  Someone at the station may have screwed up the audio output, but I'd assume generaly they don't do anything to them. 😉

If your SAP is off and you're still receiving secondary audio, will you plase provide me with the station's call letters? DVS should only be on the secondary audio feed.

Thanks!!

Hey Fox,

The TV's call station letters are WTVJ. I, predictably, haven't heard anything back from them. Again, the DVS broadcast seems to be happening completely random.

Thank you again for your help.

Hey Fox,

Thank you so much for following up on this! As of yet, the issue has not returned. I will update if it does, but let's hope it doesn't.

Thank you again.

WRAL tv in Raleigh, NC is doing this since FRIDAY NIGHT (11/20/15). I've assumed it to be an issue with ATT Uverse but reading this it sounds like it may be an issue with the station. What is my next step? Right now there is an irritating echo. Not happening on any other channel and I've tried both audio option (enhanced and AAC). No difference.

Descriptive Video Service (DVS) is provided with the data that comes from the content provider. In this case, the local TV station. We are a pass through service for that. I'll see if I can get them to address this.

Thanks!!
