How to power off receiver with S20 remote

I have fully programmed my S20 remote to turn on and off my audio received along with my tv when I press the power button. It also controls the volume of my receiver without a problem. I have one issue though. I usually go to sleep with my TV's sleep timer engaged. This causes me to wake up the next morning with the tv off and the receiver still on. The annoying part is that unlike my older att remote, I can't find a way for the remote to turn off just the TV or just the receiver. This means that when I press the power button the TV and receiver just switch on/off positions and that one is off and one is on. Clearly I can use either the TV's remote or the receiver's remote to fix this, but it defeats the purpose of having a remote that can control both. I swear my dog sat on the remote once and it just turned off the reciever but I can't figure out what he pushed and I can't find the answer anywhere online. I'm feeling really dumb so please help. Thanks

Hi @aperch89,

Sorry about the issues you are having with the new S20 remote. With the new remote, there are no device keys to just select one device to power on/off. You can change the functionality on your remote, so that it only turns on/off the U-verse receiver, but it would just cause a problem on turning on the other devices. Also, you can change the order in which the devices receive the power signal, and try to press the power button and then put your hand over the remote, so the signals for the other devices do not go through. To do so:

  1. Enter Program Mode – Press and hold the OK and MENU keys simultaneously for three seconds until the POWER key flashes red twice to confirm you are in program mode.
  2. Press POWER key – Press the POWER key. The POWER key will blink once and the remote backlighting will remain on.
  3. Program the power on and off sequence for your devices – (On demand button for TV, Interactive for Audio, and My Multiview for the receiver), press each key in the sequence you wish to turn on and off when the power key is pressed. The POWER key will flash red once for each device programmed.
  4. Press OK to save – Press the OK key to save the power control settings

So ideally, you would probably want to turn the receiver on first, then TV, then sound system. And when you just want to turn on the receiver, press the power button and quickly put your hand over the remote so the singals for the TV and sound system do not go through.

It may be easier to buy a 3rd party remote that will provide a lot more control.

Hope this hepls.

That is incredibly stupid. Why in the world would a remote ever be designed that way?! It would literally take 2 extra buttons that every previous att remote has had and that all your competitors' remotes have. I am very disappointed. The older remote I had was able to turn on and off the receiver along with the TV but the volume buttons still controlled the TV volume and not the receiver volume which was incredibly frustrating. I don't know why anyone who wants to program their remote to turn off/on an amp/receiver would not want the remote to control its volume as well. I was excited to get a new box with a remote that could control my receiver's volume, but now the power button functionality is terrible. Clearly the people who design your remotes have never actually used one before and don't know understand how customers use them! I can't be the only person with this issue. I know many people don't use their TV sleep timer in this way, but anyone who has ever used a remote capable of controlling multiple devices knows that often times the signal can be interrupted and therefore would need to be able to control one device at a time as well.

Hi,

I definitely understand your concerns, and I apologize about that. With the volume controls, you can actually adjust the volume control on either remote to control whatever device you choose. The power button would still be an issue on the new remote, but if you are interested in separating the volume controls, below are links to the manuals for both remotes. Check under the advanced control options for volume.

You are saying - You have an S-20 remote programmed to toggle power on both the STB (aka receiver) and the TV. This works OK for normal use.

You have a case where the two get out of synch - the TV is off & the STB is on. The solution to resynch the two is the OK button. That is what it is there for.

Press power - STB=off,TV=on

Press OK - STB-on, TV=on

Whenever you get out of synch press the power button until you see the OK screen on the TV & then press OK.

You only need the two buttons for STB & TV. When your setup includes a home theater (aka audio receiver) it breaks. No way to synch TV & home theater if one is on & the other off.

Another thought about your case - Many people complain about the STB auto sleep. I always thought it was too long to be effective & it should be user setable so that the few that needed to could disable it. In you case, if you could set it to four hours, when you wake up both the TV & STB would be off.
