Are Set Top Boxes Needed With U-verse?
I have U-verse and 5 separate TVs - all with set top boxes. Some are older TVs, a couple are smart TVs, and one has a Roku. In what cases do I need a set top box?

If you want to use the DVR, that’s your only option.
You can use a Fire TV streaming device on any HDMI capable TV to run the U-verse app, although with limited functionality.

If you had a FireTV device, I'd suggest you download the U-verse program that gr8sho discusses and see if that is good enough for what you want on one or more TVs. If so, there's your answer. I can tell you that it will not allow you to view programs recorded on your DVR. It will allow you to schedule and delete recordings, but not view them. Not all channels are available to watch live. Only some channels' on demand content is available. It's not as responsive as the receiver, but what you're watching on it shouldn't count as one of your household streams, either.

Alternatively, you can log in to the various apps offered by each channel on your Chromecast, game system or whatever other device you have.
This would be a bit tedious, as you'd have go back to your device's main menu every time you wanted a new channel.

Thanks to all who responded - good info! I figured there was a way to do this, but also assumed it may be more quirky than STB, so I'll keep what I have for now. Thanks again!
