Why is there such a long delay?

If you have a another device hooked to the main server you will also see a delay between the two.  There is the processing time for each device from the studio to the final TV. Digital transmission does take some time to progress through the "system".

Think about how many steps a signal has to go through to get to your TV.  From the camera to the control room for selection of this video.  Also, the initial picture is analog so it has to be converted to digital.  Then this digital signal is sent to some server which then puts it onto the internet for distribution to the network stations.  Even if this signal is transmitted by fiber there is some transmission time.  As a point of information, the velocity of propagation in fiber is SLOWER than in cable and cable is not at the speed of light. It has a Vp depending on the dielectric constant of the cable.

Now, this digital signal has to be converted to either a QUAM or 8VSB analog RF signal, sent to the satellite, back down to your receiver, demodulated into digital again, and then sent to your TV.  Not the fastest way but this provides an error-correcting packet for viewing.

When you think of it, it's pretty slick.

This is not an all server issue.   I have multiple TVs in my garage for sports viewing.  Two use DirectTV stream on Samsung OS, one has a roku.  All devices show 200mbps+ connection. 

The same app on the same channel all Ethernet connected to the same network, the Roku display is always about 30-45 seconds behind the others.  

This is actually quite annoying for big live  sports events.  App notifications and texts from others watching same event come through before the roku displays them.  

Sure you can silence your phone, but for something like the local team being in the World Series, the neighbors cheering an almost a minute before you see them is no  fun.   

This issue is persistent on 3 different models of roku, wifi as well as wired.

There is computer processing time associated with each provider.  ROKU may be getting its program information from sources that have already done post-processing and reconversion.  This will add considerably to the overall transit time.  I have seen a delay between the main TV next to the DirecTV server and another TV connected by MOCA. It is at least a one-second delay.

You are complaining about one minuet?

Ansky360.  I have both Direct TV Stream and Direct TV Satellite and when watching the same program on both services and toggling between them, there is an "almost" 1 minute difference.  That's a lot and it didn't used to be that way.

I was not complaining, just stating a fact.

The delay is considerably less on YouTube TV and MLB.tv than it is on Directv Stream, they need to fix this for the sports fans. It is particularly annoying when watching a live game or the red zone channel and being a minute behind all of the messages, notifications and live scoring. Youtube TV fixed it, why shouldn't Directv be able to do the same.
