Too many streams error on my home network. ASUS router and Starlink internet.

I am getting a too many streams error in my home. I have already used up my 4 times per year reset but I am certain it will happen again. I am streaming through Starlink so a static ip is not an option. This seems to happen after a power failure or Starlink reboot. No rhyme or reason which of 5 smart TV’s this will occur on. Obviously it appears as if I am streaming away from home but that is very rarely done. Also noticed that the IP address that shows up on my TV’s does not match the address from my router even though it says it is connected to my home Wi-Fi. Have been looking at using a VPN to see if that would be a remedy to this. Any help would be welcome.

Not surprised. Your IP keeps changing causing the service to think you are not home. Like others,  nothing you can do with Starlink. There are many posts in the forum regarding Starlink. Suggest you review and understand what is taking place.

If the addresses on your TVs are 192.168.x.x, those aren't "real" addresses (they are reserved for use on "private" networks, like a home intranet) and your router maps them onto your real address (the one that keeps changing).

Whether a VPN would help would depend if the VPN service could offer the equivalent of a static address.  Since much of the intent for VPN use for most people is to become less traceable, a stable address runs counter to that, so it may be unlikely, but you can ask.

Thanks for the reply.
The address I get when I get the too many streams is not a 192.168.x.x which is what I see on this TV now and matches my router. That is not the address that shows when I check on the tv that has been locked out.
The one I am in front of is fairly new and replaced one with a Genesis box. It has thus far not had the issue nor did the one it replaced. It’s as if the TV’s picked up an address from outside my routers network. I don’t live close enough to any thing to have picked up another WiFi network.

They really should come up with another way of determining if you are out of your home. At the very least, if they see 4 or 5 of you devices all change to a new 'IP' at the same time, they could make that your new 'home address'. It shouldn't matter if it happens once a month or once a year. DirectTV should figure it out.

The concept they use has been like this since conception. I would not be looking for them to make a change. The issue is with your ISP changing the location, not DirecTV.

Thats the thing, I was pointing out no one is changing locations. The internet provider is just changing IP addresses. What I was saying was DirectTV should change the method they are using, because it's not an accurate indicator of changing home locations. Thanks for the helpful input though.

All services use some mechanism to determine your location. They have determine that this is the direction that they would use. In any case, do not expect a change in the long term. Essentially they have use IP for over 8 years now.

What internet provider do you use?

I use Xfinity. It seems pretty steady, but yes, every few months I get a message saying that I'm out of home on my DirectTV Stream box. It only occurs when we have multiple streams going in the house. My only point is, they can use better methods for really determining if someone is in/out of home. IP addresses should only be a baseline. If they see all your devices change IP's in a certain range, they should be able to determine that the IP has been changed by your service provider, and update accordingly.

Agreed. They should use a different method to determine home location. But it's not looking like they plan to make any changes.

My question here was really what can I do to prevent this from happening. I don’t really expect Directv or Starlink to change the way they operate. Pretty much every internet service provider uses dynamic addresses. Most that will provide static addresses charge extra for them. I live out in the sticks. Starlink is very nearly my only choice and has been the best service I have had in the 9 years I have lived out here.

Unfortunately, there is nothing else you can do. You might try resetting your environment (modem) several times when it occurs in an attempt to obtaining another IP address. That is the only control that you have.
