It sounds like your son would need to set his home location for service.  If you do not set the home location it acts as if you are away from home and sees all usage as being away from your home Wifi network leaving only 2 TV streams and one other device such as a phone, tablet, or computer to view the third away stream.  He has unlimited TV's at his home location as long as the home location can be set.  Some devices do not have the option to set the home location.  Do you know what devices he uses to stream his direct streaming service?

This problem will also happen if you don't have a static IP address.  My Verizon 5G doesn't offer one and whenever they change mine, DTV no longer sees my home network.  Yes, you can set a new home location but only up to twice per year.

There could be another issue at play here.  One of the tech support guys told me that if you turn off the TV without closing the DTV app the TV will still be counted as an active stream.  And whenever your IP address changes, some or all of your devices will register as not on your home network.  So, these two issues together mean if you have the service on a few TVs and leave the apps open you could exceed the limit of two off-network TV streams going at the same time--regardless of whether you're sharing the service with others.

I was initially getting the "too many streams" message but the problem seemed to stop when the two friends I'm sharing with and I started closing the app before turning off the TV.  The problem just reappeared, however, and I see that none of my 3 TVs are listed as on the network.  I'll check but I'm sure Verizon must have changed my IP address.

You can check if your TV is on your home network at Settings/Preferences/Home Settings.  You can also call tech support and they'll have a list of all devices that have accessed your service and you can tell them which are on your network and they will correct it.  One tech mentioned that one of my devices kept switching back and forth between off and on network.  That was probably my phone, when I watch DTV away from my home wi-fi.

Depends on how your device is powered. By a wall receptacle, the device will always be powered and the device active if you do not exit the app. If by the TV USB port, it depends. Some TVs actually power down the unit and some don't. Rule is to always exit any app.
