Recording series that are in first run on one network and syndication on other(s)

Let me preface this question by saying I've had DirecTV for coming on 30 years and probably almost every incarnation of DVR that they've sold, from Microsoft Ultimate TV, to DirecTivo, to the various DirecTV standalone boxes, to the Genie, and now the DirecTV Stream Gemini, Amazon Firesticks, and iPhone app.

One of the things you could do with all the prior (satellite) incarnations was distinguish series recordings by time slot and channel or just record everything.  When you distinguished by time slot/channel you got different "stacks" of shows in your playlist.  Let's say you lived in the Southern NY area.  Law and Order:  SVU is generally on once per week on NBC (WNBC channel 4) in a regular time slot and it's also on in various bingeworthy modes on other channels like USA and ION.

On the prior DVRs, I could have set up recordings for each of the stations that wouldn't ever wipe out the newest episodes, as the USA and ION recordings would be in their own "stack."  I cannot figure out how to accomplish this on the DirecTV stream UI.

Also, is there a way to stop recording a series without deleting all the current recordings?

And, how do you do this from the Amazon Firestick interface?

Thanks,

Scott

You don't. Recordings are based on media title, not by network, and are all stored in a single library entry - My Library.

Well, unless you actually work on the software, you cannot know the underlying data structures that are maintaned, combined, and traversed to generate the various views in the user interface.  It is highly unlikely that a single and unique "my library" data structure is used to generate the view, as the presenting network information and, by implication through the commercials embedded with the program, the local affiliate information is clearly kept along with the date/time information.

To contrast, a recording is completely different from an on-demand presentation, which contains the "commercial-free," raw program with commercials generated at presentation time that also cannot be skipped.

Unless you have some insider information, the best your answer could be, "I don't know of any way to do what you ask."

If, by favorable coincidence, you are correct that the user interface doesn't support what I want, I'd further point out that the user interface design is a "vessel of fertilizer."  The product manager and designer should have anticipated (or reacted to) the situation where the newest episode of a program might be deleted by a slew of older episodes being "binge broadcast" on another network - it only takes 30, which is frequently achieved for shows like Blue Bloods, NCIS, SVU, etc.  I'm not saying the prior behavior would be the best response, but there should be some way to prevent that scenario from occurring.

Scott, we're sorry you're dealing with an issue with the recordings preventing you from stopping them instead of deleting them. We want to investigate this situation further. We're sending you a PM to gather the information from your account. Claudia, DIRECTV Community Specialist

I have to daily delete hundreds of recordings and able to keep the one I want but thus a total waste of my time. If I want to record Blue Blood on CBS on Friday night at 8:00 I still get 20 - 30 recorded !  I love DirecTV Streaming except for this recording problem that everyone seems to have.

Please address and FIX this problem and you will sign up more customers.
