Owner Restricting Streaming Availabilty

We watch TCM more frequently than any other station. In the middle of watching “So Big” this morning on TCM when suddenly the “The owner of this content has restricted its streaming availability” popped up (error 3002-18).  I do not understand how this has happened.  Who is the owner of the content? Why is it restricted? Why did it then post the warning after it had played several minutes in.

What streaming device are you using? Does this error appear on other devices? Have you tried restarting the streaming device, ensuring that the directv stream app was up to date, and reinstalling the directv stream app?

Yes, this happens when the content owner restricts how TCM (and other networks) can use their content. For example, the content might be owned by MGM or Fox Studios. The owner grants broadcast and streaming rights separately (this was a major issue in the recent Hollywood writers and actors strike). So while TCM may have broadcast rights granted, in some cases they might not have streaming rights.
